Hairstylist in My Own Salon Is My Dream Job

Table of Content

Most of the time, what a child wants to be when they grow up changes several times over the course of their life, before they finally settle on a job, that either is or isn’t what they really had wanted, or planned on. This is not the case with me. I have wanted to be a hairstylist and own my own hair salon since I was a little girl. My dream started because I wanted to be like my dad, who has his own barber shop, but the reasons have changed since I’ve became a woman.

My reasons for wanting to be a hairstylist with my own salon now are; I’m passionate about making people feel good about themselves physically and boosting their self-confidence, I’m very creative and I love to make my own hairstyles and keep up with the latest fashions, it’s a very lucrative profession with a lot of exciting opportunities, and I would love to be my own boss. Right now, I’m going to school to earn my Associate’s Degree in Business. I decided to do this because I can go to school from home, and it just fits better with my schedule right now.

I want to learn everything there is to know about opening and running my own business while in pursuit of my degree, and then when I’m finished I want to go to the Pinnacle Institute in Mooresville, NC to earn my Cosmetology license. I chose this school because it is the closest cosmetology school to where I live, which is Denver, NC. It takes 46 weeks, or 1500 hours, at the Pinnacle Institute to earn a Cosmetology license and I can get financial aid to help me pay for it through the Pinnacle Institute, kind of like I’m doing now to earn my Associates Degree in Business. Institute, 2008-2013) Through my research done on the career of Cosmetology I’ve learned that people who are interested in this line of work tend to like activities that include creating, designing, and making your own rules. (Development, 2013) This definitely describes the type of personality I have, which is another reason I chose this career. I like to create new hairstyles and try them out on anybody who is brave enough to let me, usually my little girl. So, to be able to do this every day as a job and actually get paid for it would definitely be a dream come true for me.

The U. S. Department of Labor Statistics says that in 2010 there were 710,200 jobs in the United States in this line of work. The job outlook for 2010 to 2020 is 14 percent, which is about average. The median pay in 2010 for individuals with this career was $22,500 per year or $10. 82 an hour. (Statistics, 2012) As I said, I plan on owning my own salon, so the pay will probably be better than that, but I’ll be getting paid to do something that I love, and that’s what matters most to me.

I know that I have a long way to go if I want to make my dream of being a hairstylist and owning my own salon come true, but right now I am doing what I can to make it happen, and I know if I keep trying, one day my dream will definitely become a reality. I will be able to find my place in the lucrative career of cosmetology and get paid for doing what I love, which is creating my own hairstyles, making people feel great, and following my own rules.
