The Importance of Respect Essays

Respect is very commonly and mutually defined as regard for, or appreciation of worth or value of someone or something. In my opinion, respect goes far beyond this definition. Respect is the cornerstone of the society in which we live. Although many look at respect as simply treating another person or thing with kindness, this word has many different aspects. Respect plays a big role in our everyday lives. Everywhere we go and everyone we meet, we give some form of respect. Respect comes in many various forms.
It can be something such as a simple smile in passing, or it can be a great form of recognition like receiving an award. Respect is not considered a necessity in this world but, I can’t imagine a person getting very far in life without this personally trait. Different people and situations call for different forms of respect. For example, I would not give a child the same form of respect as I would an elderly citizen. The most important form of respect is self-respect. It has been said that in order to earn the respect of others, one would need to learn to treat oneself with respect.
Self-respect has a lot to do with self-esteem. If someone has low self-esteem, that someone can lose sight of self-respect and respect for others. I believe that a person’s self-respect will determine the amount of respect that they give and receive from others. Respect is a two way street. In order to get respect one must be willing to give respect. Respect is a universal value that each person desires not only to embody, but also to receive. Respect is not just what you say but also the way you act. Showing people that you take their feelings and thoughts into consideration are how to earn respect.
If you demonstrate respect toward others, then others will respect you and listen to your opinions. Another way to earn respect is by not constantly pointing out peoples faults or defects; instead you earn it by encouraging a person by to make better decisions. If you constantly are putting someone down it can lead them to have low self-respect, and potentially that person can act out their emotions. When one starts to act on their emotions it can cause one to disrespect or treat others poorly. If one acts out there emotions it can only make situations worse, not only that individual but possibly for the group as well.
I feel that if someone or people were to show kindness versus attitude, things would be much better. As I stated before, instead of pointing out faults, why not show someone the right way of things. If someone was to step up and help others, that would not only help the specific individual but others around them. With the help, perhaps that “troubled” individual would be more respectful towards others. Respect can go long ways and leave lifelong impressions. Is it better to be that person with a disrespective attitude or a respectful one? With a respectful attitude and outlook I feel one would get further in life.
