Summary

In Great Britain, about 450 children start smoking every day, and 1 in 4 of these children become regular smokers by the age of 15. However, smoking is harmful and contains over 4800 chemicals, 69 of which are known to cause cancer. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug that stimulates the nervous system, while tar is a sticky substance that contains many toxic chemicals and causes cancer. Carbon monoxide reduces the amount of oxygen the blood can carry, causing breathlessness. Smoking can cause cancer and is responsible for 30% of all cancer deaths. It kills almost 6 times as many people as road accidents, suicide, murder, manslaughter, poisoning, overdose, and HIV put together. The number of smoke-related deaths is equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every day, which is about 330 people each day or 120,000 people every year. To quit smoking, people can use nicotine patches, gum, and other nicotine replacement therapy products (NRT). Smokers have a 2-3 times more chance of having a heart attack than non-smokers, and 8 times more likely to die from lung cancer. The government earns a lot of money from cigarette taxes, but 1.7 billion pounds is spent by the National Health Service to treat diseases caused by smoking every year. 1000 non-smokers die every year because of passive smoking. While there are marginal health benefits from smoking, the risk of getting terminal illnesses outweighs the benefits. Four out of five people want to raise the legal age of smoking from 16 to 18 to prevent children from smoking. Children under the age of 16 should not be allowed to smoke as smoking can cause early death and addiction.
