The system approach

“Microsystems – immediate social settings which an individual is involve in. It is on the face to face interaction with family, school, work, church, peer group.

Macrosystem- “blueprint “for defining and organizing the institutional life of the society, including overarching patterns of culture, politics, economy etc.

Exosystem- setting in which the person does not actively participate but in which significant decisions are made affecting the individuals who do not interact directly with the person. Example for this neighborhood/community structures that affect the functioning of smaller system: newspaper, t.v.

Mesosystem – links two Microsystems together, direct or indirectly. Example, parent-teacher conference: overtime at work (http://courses.ed.asu.edu)”.

The environment of the child that surrounds is what to be considered as the entire microsystem. The structure of the family has great influence to child like. Like if the family status will identities life styles of the child. If the child is most likely materialistic meaning love of things even not the basic one just for pleasure determines that the child is given by parents all the needs the child’s wanting to. Discipline by parents is one factor determines the child’s behavior since rearing the child needs the parenting strategies. The child perception of their parents and peers attitude towards academic was assessed for its relationship to the student’s academic attitudes and sense of belongingness in school. Specifically the student’s perception of their parent’s value of academic success, academic expectations, and educational aspirations, as well as peer supports for academic was examined for its relationship to the dependent variables. The amount of sources of social support students received also correlations with academic attitudes and school sense of belonging. Social support will be defined to the include members of the individuals’ immediate and expected family, peers, school officials, and community members.

Macrosystem point of view will focus on the outside home environment of the child as she acted and responded to the environment. It is the broader aspect of life among the child. Taking into accounts the school where it considers as second home for a child. A societal emphasis has been placed on schools to provide a better future for children through a life-long educative process. In their professional roles, school psychologists are sensitive to the needs of a culturally diverse community, value the importance of children to the future of society, and advocate on the behalf of children. As an integral part of human services available to children, adolescents, adults, and families, school psychologists function across multiple settings with a focus on educational institutions. School psychologists address diverse referral issues with varied services such as consultation, counseling and other social-emotional interventions, academic and behavioral interventions, psycho educational assessment, in-service education, administrative services, research and evaluation.

Exosystem is the child attitude in none participating in responds to its environment. There are some settings or events that influence the child’s socialization even though the child has no direct role in them.  We call these ecological contexts the Exosystem.  The Exosystem has an indirect effect on the child, because the influence from the Exosystem usually impacts the child as it “trickles” down through other people in the child’s life.  New laws, government reform, environmental regulation, social unrest, financial upheaval, business and industry are a few examples of contexts that can dramatically affect a child’s life and experiences even though the child may know nothing about them.  Remember, even though the effect of the Exosystem is indirect it can still be quite profound. The Exosystem effect on a child can be short term…like a temporary change in work hours for a parent, or long term, like growing up during the depression.

Mesosystem is more profound since it is mixture of two Microsystems. Turning to the children’s initiation of these activities, the results are, for the most part, to be considers on the Childs behavior within a group. However, working class children who initiated academic lessons (by asking questions), skill/nature questions, and conversation with adults were clearly viewed as more competent by their teachers. For these children, simple engagement in these activities when initiated by someone else was not associated with later competence; what mattered for them was their own initiation of these activities.

Application of the system to the child

Aiai, a child in Microsystem will draws an idea of her behavior towards the family, the neighbor, other closest person on her surroundings. The family is the layer closest to the child and contains the structures with which the child has direct contact. Let us say for example, Aiai is a quite person since she is living in place away from the city and also his father is a quite person too. So that’s one way that Aiai has that kind of behavior .The microsystem encompasses the relationships and interactions a child has with her immediate surroundings Structures in the microsystem include family, school, neighborhood, or childcare environments. At this level, relationships have impact in two directions – both away from the child and toward the child. For example, a child’s parents may affect his beliefs and behavior; however, the child also affects the behavior and beliefs of the parent. The interaction of structures within a layer and interactions of structures between layers is key to this theory. At the microsystem level, bi-directional influences are strongest and have the greatest impact on the child. However, interactions at outer levels can still impact the inner structures.

Aiai, a child in mesosystem would mean as her acquired behavior to responds on the call of meetings or conference with teacher and parents for example in a school setting. Studies have found that parental monitoring and supervision are among the most salient practices in terms of disruptive child behaviors. For example, they have been found to predict antisocial behavior and substance use Parental involvement is also recognized as impacting on child development, and is seen as having two dimensions: parental engagement, or the amount of time a parent engages directly with a child; and parental accessibility, or the time a parent is available to the child. In the case of Aiai her parents is so supportive since her mother is a teacher so she has that enhanced school progress. Meetings and conferences with the child and parents will direction motivated since it’s of easy access to her part.

Aiai in macrosystem, for example she was able to participate in the peer group organization and accompany with other classmates in most of her school activities. This is one aspect that Aiai got a positive outlook on her peer groups.

Aaia in exosystem would mean that she is exempt on such behavior of none participating since the fact that she has a peer group. Maybe in some other aspect of exosystem might be Aaia had showed those. For example of not attending youth organization since her mother did not allow her to attend in outside group peers.

The other theory to deal with is the overall ideas beyond system that we are able to discuss. This so called ecological theory is an an excellent model for analyzing cultural influences on adolescence. However, practice is needed to identify examples of the different systems specified by the theory accurately.  A question may have in minds in which of the following accurately represent a system paired with a specific claim or finding from studies of culture’s influence on adolescence.

 Summary:

The overall views of Aaia as a child in her aspect in life would mean to be a promising child to as she will grow up with the proper association with her family and peers that is properly selected by the family of her own. It might be in the future Aiai would rather be one of the teachers as what her mother is. So being a teacher she can able to express her personal views and experiences to her peer or might be a good influence to other people of her age as well.

Family relationships in general are a very important when it comes to contexts that affect a child’s development.  Though adolescents are becoming more independent and are figuring out their self-concepts, most of their nurturing and needs are met by their parents.  Positive relationships with parents are still important during adolescent years. Without these positive relationships the children may become withdrawn or volatile, which would negatively affect their learning experiences.  To promote good family relationships, I would hold parent-teacher conferences .This would bring both positive and negative classroom interactions to the parents’ attention.  This, of course, could not possibly resolve any damaged relationships between the parents and my students, but I believe it would be helpful to foster good relationships within families because it would make the parents involved in the child’s school life and give them something to discuss and to bond over.  Another way I would relate this to my teaching would be to cultivate good relationships with my students since they may not be getting the positive relationships they crave at home.

This system includes the child’s family, school, and where the child lives.   This is the most important aspect of the entire model when it comes to the classroom because it encompasses the family, community, and school, which are the three most important contexts a child is involved in.  The way in which I would implement this model into my future career as an educator would be to stay involved in my student’s lives.  I would try to be involved in their community by going to my students’ athletic games.  I would necessarily be involved in the school.  The involvement in the students families would be as to have parent-teacher conferences.   It would try to keep in mind, but the first layer definitely seems like the most relevant.
