Barbie: a Positive or Negative Influence on Children - Barbie Essay Example

Barbie has always been a controversial argument of being a positive or negative influence on children - Barbie: a Positive or Negative Influence on Children introduction. Her oh so ever perfect body, isn’t so perfect, her dream house and various jobs, shows her independence. Some may argue that Barbie has caused girls to acquire an eating disorder to try to look like her, but the fact is that if Barbie were a real woman, she would not be proportional. In my opinion, Barbie is a good influence on children, and encourages them to become strong, independent women that don’t need a man in their life to survive and live out their dream. The appearance of Barbie has always been viewed as perfect.

With a tiny waist, big boobs, and long legs, you could say she is the fantasy figure that a male would like a woman to look like, that is if they were dolls. When Barbie is scaled to human size, her waist is the width of her head, her boobs are so massive that she wouldn’t be able to stand up, and her legs are double the size of her torso. Obviously, no woman can ever look like this, unless they have some major plastic surgery. Even if that was possible, I don’t think any woman would want to look like that, I sure don’t. Barbie wasn’t created to change little girl’s life, it was simply a way to make money.

She wasn’t set out to make girls hate their own bodies, and have an eating disorder. All of that was due to what the media was saying about her. When I was little I loved to play with Barbie’s, but the thought of, “Gee I wish I could look like Barbie, let me starve myself and throw up my food so I can be perfect” never crossed my mind. Little girls don’t think about that, they just want to have fun and use their imagination. Saying that Barbie is the reason why so many girls have eating disorders is preposterous, it’s the media and other influences, not some silly little doll.

An independent woman is a strong, self-confident one. Barbie shows girls that they can be anything they want to be, and you don’t only have to be just a mother. A baby doll is a way of training young girls to be a mother, and only that, but when Barbie came out, it was the first doll to have careers, her own house, and a car. Ken is Barbie’s man, but she never needs him in her life, he’s just there as a trophy husband. Arguments about how Barbie has so many careers shows that she is indecisive, and doesn’t stick to one career, but no, that is not the case.

A doll cannot really be doctor, firefighter, or a rock star, she is just a doll. It just shows girls that if they want to be an astronaut, they can do that, anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Throughout the years little girls and even some boys have spent many hours, dressing Barbie into different outfits, brushing her hair, and driving her around in a car. There comes a time in a child’s life when they transition into their teen years and that they start to distinguish fantasy from reality.

Eventually they learn that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy are not real. Then they move on from playing with dolls, and realize that Barbie really is just a doll, and that is all she will ever be. To say that this little doll can do such damage to a child is mind-blowing. I played with Barbie as a little girl, and I have great self-confidence and am very happy about my life. Barbie has defiantly been a positive influence in my life, and I hope I have a little girl so she can play with Barbie, and have the same fun I did.
