Workplace bullying, like childhood bullying, is the tendency of individuals or groups to use persistent behavior manifested by the use of force or coercion to affect others, particularly when the behavior is habitual and involves and imbalance of power. It can include verbal harassment, physical assault or coercion and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims, perhaps on grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality or ability. The imbalance of power may be social power and/or physical power. The victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a “target.” Over the past few decades, workplace bullying has become an important topic in the field of organizational behavior. It is well known of the consequences that it can impose on not only the employee but also the whole organization. Studies show that one in three workers have experienced at least some kind of bullying at their place of employment. Some have the fear of coming into work.
Bullying consist of three basic types of abuse- emotional, verbal and physical, but can also include psychological, and humiliation. Majority of cases reported have been perpetrated by management and takes a wide variety of forms. In this paper I will shed some light on the following: Threat to personal standing, Isolation, and Sexual harassment. I will also talk about what an Employer should do if things of this nature should take place in the work place.
Threat to personal standing , although it is not usually physically violent, they realize all of the formidable weapons of hostile actions are words. Threats to personal standings torments the individuals living, his or her self-esteem and sometimes overall health.
