Truman in 1947 with the signing of the National Security Act. The main purpose of the CIA is to assist the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency in carrying out his or her responsibility. The CIA is an independent agency accountable for providing national security intelligence to senior US policymakers. They use research and development to deploy high level technology for intelligent purposes.

Because of the extensiveness of the positions, job descriptions vary greatly in the CIA. Communicating, analyzing, and investigating are the most common duties of these agents (Aftergood 2012). After the CIA agent gathers material, he/she must examine it and comprehend what it means. They must be able to investigate and cross-examine individuals who are brought into their custody in order to learn information. CIA Job Qualifications A CIA agent must receive a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. The degrees that are typically earned to pursue a career as a CIA agent are degrees in international relations, political science or geography. Most CIA Agents have experience living in a foreign country, having an idea of how a particular culture works and being able to speak another language.

Most of the languages that are desired include Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Indonesian, Korean, Pashto, Persian, Russian, Turkish and Urdu. Agents must also have at the lease three years of experience under the field of the position they want to pursue. You must also be able to pass an extensive background check before being considered for a position in the agency. You must also be a United States citizen and have a complete indication of loyalty to the Country. CIA agents must be able to function in high-pressured situations and be able to react quickly.

Agents must also be accustomed to short deadline periods for projects assigned. You must also be able to negotiate in high-pressured circumstances (CIA Agent 2012). Salary of a CIA Agent As a CIA special agent, most people have to work their way up to becoming a higher agent. Salary for a beginner agent would start around $58,511 and would gradually increase as THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY 4 the agent became more experienced to about $81,204 as of 2010. CIA agents who work in potentially dangerous situations tend to earn a higher salary than an agent who works inside of an office.

Many agents, who specialize in speaking a foreign language, or languages, are paid slightly more than a typical agent. Agents who specialize in this typically are paid around $94,837 annually (CIA Agent Salary 2012). The founding of the Central Intelligence Agency aided many of the Americans problems and concerns of their intelligence deficiencies. President Truman created a successful agency with the National Security Act that still is used in present day.
