The bulk of the information covered in this course was covered in the training for the exam 70.216, Implementing and Administering A Microsoft Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure, which I took in 2001 in preparation for my MCSE certification. In addition to the training and certification exam, I was required to have one year’s experience in the area network server implementation and administration. I have taken numerous other training courses and Microsoft Certification exams which also encompassed parts of the coursework for CIS 401. Additionally, I have six years work experience implementing and administering network servers.

Domain Name System (DNS) services were a major focus of this exam. I was required to be able to install and configure DNS client and server services, configure a root name server as well as a caching-only server, configure zones, test the DNS services, troubleshoot DNS problems and manually create DNS records. DNS service implementation and administration were also the subjects of numerous other Microsoft Certification exams I have taken, and I have extensive work experience with DNS configuration and administration. I am very confident in this aspect of network server administration.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, or DHCP, was also discussed in-depth in preparation for this exam. Installation, configuration and troubleshooting were all discussed, as well as the integration of DHCP with Active Directory services.

TCP/IP was a major focus of the training and associated exam. Installation topics we discussed were installation and configuration of TCP/IP and configuration of network bindings, as well as configuring packet filters. I learned how to monitor and troubleshoot network traffic as well as network security using IPSec. IP Routing was an associated topic that was also discussed in detail during the training. I learned how to install, configure and troubleshoot IP routing protocols as well as implementation of direct-dial routing. I learned how to manage, monitor and troubleshoot both internal and border routing.

During this period I also learned how to install, configure and troubleshoot WINS (Windows Internet Name Service). This included details on how to install and configure the service, troubleshoot problems, and monitor the ongoing service operation. Additionally, we discussed WINS replication and NetBIOS name resolution.

Remote access using both dial-in services and virtual private network (VPN) were addressed as well. Remote access configuration and troubleshooting, including creating a remote access policy and profiles, configuring inbound connections and configuring VPN and Routing and Remote Access connections were all discussed. We also touched on remote access security, authentication protocols and multilink connections.

In addition to the Implementing and Administering a Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure exam, I have covered these topics in a wide variety of other training sessions on the path to obtaining my MCSE and MCSA certifications. My most recent exam, Managing and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Environment, included the topics of DNS installation, configuration and troubleshooting as well as network security concerns.

I have a long-standing competency in the area of network server implementation and administration. From the beginning of my career as a Microsoft Certified Professional I have participated in and trained in the tasks covered in the course. Installation and configuration of DNS and WINS, DHCP, TCP/IP and other network protocols, and remote access protocols, troubleshooting of all areas of network connectivity and design and implementation of security and access protocols are all areas in which I have trained extensively. I also have six years of real-life administration experience which has included all the areas of implementation included in this course. I believe that my knowledge of the topics covered in CIS 408 is extremely sound, and that I should be given work-life credit for this course.
