CIS 401, Network Server Implementation, is designed to teach students how to administer a client/server network infrastructure - CIS 401 Network Server Implementation introduction. The bulk of the information covered in this course was covered in the training for the exam 70.216, Implementing and Administering A Microsoft Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure, which I took in 2001 in preparation for my MCSE certification. In addition to the training and certification exam, I was required to have one year’s experience in the area network server implementation and administration. TCP/IP was a major focus of the training and associated exam. Installation topics we discussed were installation and configuration of TCP/IP and configuration of network bindings, as well as configuring packet filters. During this period I also learned how to install, configure and troubleshoot WINS (Windows Internet Name Service). This included details on how to install and configure the service, troubleshoot problems, and monitor the ongoing service operation. Additionally, we discussed WINS replication and NetBIOS name resolution.
Remote access using both dial-in services and virtual private network (VPN) were addressed as well. Remote access configuration and troubleshooting, including creating a remote access policy and profiles, configuring inbound connections and configuring VPN and Routing and Remote Access connections were all discussed. We also touched on remote access security, authentication protocols and multilink connections.
In addition to the Implementing and Administering a Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure exam, I have covered these topics in a wide variety of other training sessions on the path to obtaining my MCSE and MCSA certifications. My most recent exam, Managing and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Environment, included the topics of DNS installation, configuration and troubleshooting as well as network security concerns.
