Communication is sending a message via a medium from a party to another that can be understood. Harold Lasswell, a communication theorist defined it as “who says what to whom in what channel with what effect.
There are several modes of communication:

Advantages and disadvantages of these modes have been researched on to either better ways of communication or stop the ways of communication.
Methodologies such as use of questionnaires, interviews (face to face& telephone); secondary data have been used to come up with the most preferred modes.
Types of communication
I t is Putting down information in ink and on paper. Writing has been a mode of communication since the 4th millennium BC to present time (Stephen, D). Conveying messages in written forms in organization can be through memos, formal letters, notices, brochures and so on. Other ways can be through newspapers and magazines. Advantages of writing are that one can have tangible evidence and can be used for later references. Disadvantages come in when one can not see the feelings of the sender thus make it hard for one to understand the urgency of the message. More so, it is easier for the receiver to misunderstand the message especially if hard words are used. The sender is also not able to get immediate feedback.
Face to face communication
It is communication between two individuals or individuals in a group. It has shown to be the most effective mode of communication. This is so because, feedback is quick, easy to tell emotions thus tell the urgency of the message, it also betters interpersonal relationships and one can get immediate explanation if understanding is difficult.
It includes the use of symbols/images, behavior and actions to convey a message. Symbols or images used can be graphs, trademarks, logos, charts and photographs. Non-verbal behavior includes: active listening, body language and actions. Active listening is strengthened by maintaining good eye contact and an alert body posture. Body language and actions could be eye contacts, gestures, facial expressions, posture and appearance. Effective communication is attained when both communicators have stable eye contact. Good grooming and dressing should be appropriate for the occasion. An interviewer is bound to employ someone who is officially dressed and well groomed than one who is ragged. Appearance, according to research, is a major way that individuals use to know the character of a person.
It is the use of ones voice to communicate. Language always comes in in this type of communication. For effective communication to take place, both parties must share a common language. Verbal communication can be through talking and singing. Tone variation is important in this kind of communication. People use tone variations to express there emotions. Speaking softly can be a way to tell someone is sad or board. Loudly, could be someone is happy or angry. The pitch of the voice keeps changing depending on the emotions of an individual. Effective communication occurs when people are able to understand these variations and to respond to them quickly.
Electronic mode of communication
It is the use of electronic machines to convey messages. This mode of communication has improved over the years. It involves use of radios, televisions, internet, telephones, cellular phones and fax machines. Radio transmition has improved over the years. It has moved from analog transmission to digital transmition. There are increasing radio channels all over the world. Countries are transmitting their stations to other countries increasing communication of individuals all over the world. Televisions have not been left behind as it is possible to watch live games in countries very far from our own. Fax machines are used to send messages instantly. They are fast and efficient especially in emergency cases. Telephone communication has improved; today they can be carried everywhere (cellular phones). They have become very useful in communication but many argue that they have brought about decline in face to face interactions reducing interpersonal relationships. Messages, e-mails can be sent via the phone. Dating lines have been open within the internet. One can engage in any kind of a relationship using the internet. Education has improved through e-learning, where a student from the UK can study in America via the internet without t raveling to America.
How to practice research
First of all, observation method can be used to tell if most people are frequenting to the internet than before. It can be done by trying to look at how often students visit the computer labs while in school. By acquiring data from cyber cafes on how many customers do they get everyday and when do they have peak hours.
Questionnaires can be given to all people of all kind of ages to find out the most used mode of communication and why it is preferred from the others. From this, one can come up with ways of improving the modes of communication or knowing which mode is being out faced.
Reading books and journals from previous writers to know views they have on the changes of modes of communication and which they think are proffered.
Face to face interviews can be arranged for. This will help come up with advantages and disadvantages of the modes of communication.
