Home health services or ‘in-home services’ is healthcare which is provided to people who have the special requirement of staying at home. Some of the conditions in which home care is required include:-
Elders who are very ill
Chronically ill patients
Severely disabled people
People recovering from surgery
Palliative care treatment
Some of the various skilled types of services that can be provided under home care include:-
Physician care – Physicians are able to diagnose and treat illnesses at home. The physician would not be spending much time with the patient compared to other healthcare professionals such as nurses and assistants. From time to time, the services of specialists including surgeons may be required for a very short duration (specific treatment and evaluation)
Nursing care – A nurse would be spending huge amount of time with the patient requiring home care. In certain situations, a nurse may be required round-the clock to meet the needs of the patient. Several services such as injections, intra-venous drug administration, wound care, education and motivation, nursing diagnosis and assessments, etc, may be required under nursing home care.
Physiotherapy – Following a surgery or injury physiotherapy may be required to restore mobility and strength. They can potentially teach the patient how to walk and return to functioning at home.
Dietician – They would help evaluate the nutritional needs of the patient and according plan an appropriate nutrition program. Evaluation of the diet history is also required.
Speech therapist – Patients recovering from a problem involving the throat, upper respiratory and digestive tract, etc, may require the services of a speech therapist. Such services are usually required following a surgery, stroke, or trauma.
