Compare the size of cheek cell and onion cell DCP: Introduction: In this experiment, Onion cells (Allium cepa) Cheek cells (Homo sapiens) were measured and compared. The aim of this experiment is to find out how both cells differ by comparing their size. Onion cells (Allium cepa) is plant cell and Cheek cells (Homo sapiens) is an animal cell. Hypothesis: The size of an animal cell (Homo sapiens) should be smaller than a plant cell (Allium cepa). Because a plant cell has cell wall which is to maintain the size of it while animal cell doesn’t.

Also, plant cell usually has a large vacuole and chloroplast, therefore it should be larger than an animal cell. The estimate size of plant cell is between 300µm too 500µm1, animal cell should be around 1-100µm 2. Method: 1. Measuring the ratio of the microscope First, set up a microscope on the 40x objective and focus it on the ‘small ruler’. Then, adjusted the microscope stage till the ‘small ruler’ touches the left and the right-most point.

The size of Homo sapiens is 48. 5 and the literature value is 30. 1 Some of the cheek cell seems to be a little bit bigger because before the experiment, the cheek cell donor drank some water. Due to osmosis, cheek cell became turgid therefore size of it increase. P value was less than 0. 05, therefore null hypothesis is rejected. Mean values are significantly different.

Evaluation: It’s difficult to really see the length of the cell. Since the cells are really small. In this case, we can use a larger magnification for example use 100x rather than 40x. Also, we may measure the same cell over and over again since all cells looks alike. We can divide the slide into different sections, try not to go back to the same area again. Lastly, the size of the cheek cell maybe affected by water potential since there’s saliva in our mouth. Try not to drink water for a certain of time in order to keep it as a fair test.
