Comparing a Rose for Emily and a Worn Paith
Responds to Martha:
I quite disagree with your first statement, if you read the story well, you will notice that even before she knew Homer Barron there have been complains by her neighbor about her stinking house, and also it was written that after one to two weeks the smell faded away i.e - Comparing a Rose for Emily and a Worn Paith introduction. ‘After a week or two the smell went away’ so it was not the smell of the homers decomposition. The smell might be due to something else, I think it might be as a result of deposition of sewage and dirt in her house over a very long time that later smells offensively. The judge even recognized this when he said:

“It’s simple enough,” he said. “Send her word to have her place cleaned up. Give her a certain time to do it in, and if she don’t….”
It was much later that the issue of Homer Barron came in, so, to my own understanding, attributing the smell to the dead of her new lover is wrong it was because of her generalized uncleanliness
Response to Harald:
In my own opinion I think it is a good clinical sign to diagnose psychotic problem on someone who kept a corpse in his or her house for a long time. This is the case for Emily; the fact that she kept Homer Barron corpse in her house even if she did not kill him is a good sign that something was wrong with her.
When a normal person goes to buy arsenic or any drug and he or she was asked the reason for the purchase, a normal individual will respond promptly and defend the reason, but Emily was asked many times the reason why she wanted to buy the drug and even the drug seller suggested an option for her;
“I want some poison,” she said.
“Yes, Miss Emily. What kind? For rats and such? I’d recom-“
“I want the best you have. I don’t care what kind”
The druggist named several. “They’ll kill anything up to an elephant. But what you want is-“
But she refused to talk. Though this does not mean she bought this drug because she wanted to kill Homer, but she came to buy the drug because she did not know what she was doing, I think she was been controlled by some forces. From the passage, it can be retrieved that she must have killed Homer with this drug either intentionally or accidentally as a result of her psychotic problem.
If an individual lost a loved person the solution is not to keep the corpse inside the house since it has no use, it will only bring bad odor and evil dreams. For a reasonable and normal person, if you want to continue remembering a dead loved ones the best thing to do is to keep and preserve the deceased picture so that anytime the person remembers the dead the picture represents.
