The main feature of the Sony Playstation 3 is that it allows for the ability for firmware updates to be downloaded from the website and installed and used on the PlayStation 3. The updates can be installed via System Update, HDD, or a Game that requires a firmware update.  The latest version of firmware for the US and Japanese PlayStation 3 is version 1.51, released February 2, 2007. This update fixes graphical issues for PS1/PS2 games, adds additional security options, adds Edy payment options for Japan, and includes other minor XMB updates.

Among the more interesting innovations introduced my Sony Computer Entertainment is the option in the XMB menu to install alternative operating systems such as Linux Distributions, Fedora Core 5m Gentoo, Debian and Yellow Dog.

In comparison the Microsoft Xbox 360 utilizes the Xbox 360 dashboard which is a tabbed interface.  The system upgrades are limited however unlike the Sony Playstation 3 because the only options for operating systems are those released by Microsoft.  The operating system allows for support through Windows Media Connect and allows users to utilize the latest Media Software of Microsoft.

Both of these gaming console systems are currently available at any electronics and media store subject however to availability.  While both products are equally impressive, the main consideration for any potential buyer or hardcore gamer is the use for the system.  The Sony Playstation 3 is designed to act as a PC (personal computer) replacement with the addition of high capacity blu-ray dvds while the Microsoft Xbox 360 is intended to be an entertainment system.  The limitation of the Sony Playstation 3 however is its price which ranges from US $500 to US $600 depending on the add-ons while the Microsoft Xbox 360 ranges from US $400 to US $500 depending on the upgrades desired.

Pound for pound however it is clear that the Sony Playstation 3 gives better graphics and sound support as well as the option to use other operating systems unlike the Microsoft Xbox 360 which sticks to Microsoft developed programs.  For raw computing power and graphics, the Sony Playstation 3 is the best gaming console that is currently available but it is selling at a currently steep price.
