Competency standard

To maintain a commitment to professionalism

As an early childhood provider it is very important to me to maintain a commitment to professionalism. There are many ways I show how I keep professionalism in the workplace. I am very reliable and I enjoy working with children and I keep a positive attitude in my role. I come to the workplace on time and with a smile on my face. I make sure I wear clothes that allow me to get messy with the children but are still professional. I also enjoy talking to the children. I make sure they know I am there for them and that they brighten up my day every day I see them. I choose to become an early childhood professional because of my son. I had him in 2009 and he is the best thing that has happened to me. He showed me how I could love and help others. After having him and seeing how much I help him with learning his ABC’s and 123’s it made me think I can help children just like him. That’s when I made the decision to become an early childhood profession. To help young children at an early age is very important to me because they can take in so much, and have fun doing it. To know I can make a difference in a younger child’s life’s means everything to me. When I’m in the class with my children I feel like they are my own and I love and care for them as much as I love my own.

There is nothing I rather be doing other than teaching children so that they can better themselves, to become anything in the world they would like to be. If my children would like to become a doctor and a lawyer or even a teacher I tell them go for it “shoot for the moon and if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.’ I like to remind myself of the NAEYC code of ethics every day. I “create and maintain a safe and healthy setting that foster children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development and that I respect their dignity and their contribution.” I also “support the right of each child to play and learn in an inclusive environment that meets the needs of children with and without disabilities.” I live by these ethics every day.

Teaching children is not just a job for me anymore it’s my career. I have learned and grown so much over the last 4 years. To know that I can change the life of a young child is important me. To get to know the children and their families and how I can help them makes me feel a part of their family. I continue my growth by going to training and conventions that will help me better myself, so that I can better my programs and the life of children and their families.
