The importance of computer education cannot be discounted. As such, it would be necessary to ask how computer education courses are being used in public school systems. This would be the research question that will be dealt with by this proposal. In doing so, this research project can contribute to an understanding of the present state of computer education, identify several strong points and weak points. In the process, recommendations for the improvement of the treatment of computer education will be improved, thereby contributing to a better process of teaching students about computer applications and how to use computer for their learning and other activities.
Rationale for the Study
There are a number of reasons why this study should be undertaken. One would be an analysis of the present situation of public school systems and how computer education is being treated. Both the teachers, the students and the technology and systems being used will then be analyzed so as to come up with a benchmark for analysis.
Secondly, the challenges being faced by public schools in their handling of computer education will be explored. As the research project will progress, these challenges will be identified together with their impact on the overall learning process of the students.
Computer education is very crucial to the learning process of students nowadays. If it is not handled effectively in the public schools, then the education and performance of students in the future will be severely affected. This will also affect the society in the long term. There has been growing emphasis on the importance of knowledge and information in the global market. Computer education is the means of preparing these students for the demands and rigor of the professions they will be pursuing in the future. A serious flaw in the computer education framework and practice will therefore mean that these students will not be as effective with their computer skills as the students from other schools. Since public schools are important, then computer education should be improved greatly.
This research will utilize a qualitative approach. This process will yield a more in-depth analysis of the present state of computer education and thus will be more helpful than a quantitative approach. This will utilize participant observation in various classrooms so that the level of effectiveness of computer education will be assessed. Interviews with learners and teachers will be conducted to ascertain the kinds of challenges that they face in the computer education (Bogdan & Biklen, 1998).
Content analysis of extant curriculum will also be conducted so as to understand the present framework of computer education of public schools. The result of this content analysis will be juxtaposed with that of the results of the participant observation and the interviews so that a more complete picture of the computer education situation will be arrived at.

Teachers are very important component of computer education. Hence, if they show some sort of phobia in using technology and computers in the classroom, they can impart this kind of phobia to their students. In this case, even if computers are available in the public schools, they cannot be used by teachers because of their phobia of technology. Teachers also feel that they are not effective in using computers and this could lead to long-term negative effects in the computer education of learners (Rosen & Weil, 1999).
Roschelle, et. al (2000) recommends that computer education should involve active engagement and usage of computer technology. Group participation should also be present. There should be frequent feedback and interaction and learning should be connected to real world contexts. This can lead to a better means of approaching computer education.
Computer anxiety in learners is another issue that should be dealt with. Not every student has access to computers and technology. Those who are do not tend to have computer anxiety. As such, it falls upon the teacher to deal with the learners’ computer anxiety before actual learning could occur (Rosen & Weill, 1999b).
This study will look at several variables. One variable would be the curriculum of computer education. This would prescribe the kind of education that the learners will receive. In addition to this, the effectiveness of the teacher will be analyzed. The presence of computer anxiety will also be diagnosed in the learners and the manner in which they deal with this anxiety. The phobia of teachers of technology will also be noted. The availability of computer hardware and software will also be looked into because this is a very important component of computer education in public schools. By looking at these variables, a more accurate picture of the state of computer education will be arrived at.
