Connection between religion and violence Essay

Connection between religion and violence

There has been a growing interest and concern among the social scientists in the study of the relationship that exist between the religion and the violence - Connection between religion and violence Essay introduction. The connection between the religion and the violence has turned out to be a subject that has lead to a great debate and disagreement among many theology researchers and social scientists. It has been witnessed that many religious groups have been involved in violence although such groups proclaim that in their faith they encourage peace among themselves and the rest of the world. Some say that the involvement of the religions in violence is superficial, and that all the conflicts that may arise are really about resources. Such arguments may have validity, but pretending that the removal of the religion will leave without anything is just a fantasy. Regardless of that, the religion is not the original, ultimate cause of violence; it can lead to up playing a very vital role that keeps the violence continuing. Violence in our case can be conceptualized in various forms such as: a process, an act, or a relationship. Violence may involve an action of an individual, as a murder of people or singe person by either a members or members of a given religious group, an insider by outsider, or outsider by insider. It may also be an action done collectively by a certain members of a given religion that may be against another group of different faith. Violence explicitly may or many not invoke the objectives of a religion (Ucko, 2003, pp. 50).

Over the past Two decades the number of the reported conflicts has been increasing significantly where the religion is a salient factor of such violence. A research that was carried out by two United States social scientists indicated that religion has motivated terrorism and wars especially in those questions modern legitimacy of the society. The absence of the world values has been the common compliant in which god has been excluded. Making the religion a new social order foundation has been the common goal. Many religious groups have had the belief that the rest of the world should conform to their text foundational or the sacred values and commands. No single religious group that can be exempted from the act or process of violence. Christian militia, Muslim, Buddhists, and Hindus have once or severally got involved in acts of violence that have led to loss of lives for thousands innocent people. The militia of Christians who killed several families of Muslims on the island of Spice regard themselves as the Christ army.  There has been an endless war that has existed since hundreds years back between the Palestine and the Israelites. The war is attributed to the differences in faith that exist between the two nations, that is, the Muslims of the Palestine and the Christians of the Israel. A major contributing factor in religious mindset formation that endorses terrorism and fosters violence is with no doubt the believers’ attitude towards the revelation. The interpretation of the sacred texts in a manner to claim the superiority of the spirit, the high boundaries and the prejudice risk gives in a room for worse and active discrimination that is very real. Despite the fact that these texts are selected depending on their choice, and  their focus solely on underscoring passages, their superiority and the claim to truth over others whilst do not put into considerations those passages that puts more concern over the universal nature of the divine compassion and love. This is an issue that does not perturb them at any given moment (Ellens, 2007, pp. 201).

Whatever the traditions of a religion, the inspired terrorist faith, all have in common the belief that the texts foundation were dictated by the authority that is divined as there can not be interpretation beyond this. As it is written the word should be followed no any distinction between the fable and the fact.  Their source of the knowledge is the text. It is the truth of God and should not be compromised at all. The legitimacy claimed by some of the religious groups in the interpretation of some of their scriptures is bolstered by the several episodes in the past of each of the major traditions of the religious groups, which agree on the use of violence. It is well witnessed that each of the religious group in past have endorsed use of violence to promote sectarian interests of their own. Ethnic grievances, the political oppression or social conditions may provide the trigger that result to violence by the religious activities. However, these factors may not be independent cause of violence by the religious groups. Unlike the wisdom that is received distinctly, apocalyptic view of the world, strong internal control, charismatic leadership, communal intense solidarity, and the isolating high boundaries of the members in the society in themselves do not lead to the productivity of the group towards violence. Regardless of many cults of the religious groups, the religions share in common certain characteristics. This does not contribute to violence either towards the outside world or towards their members and shows that the cause of the violence is more complex. When leadership feels from negative coverage under threat which is based on former occasions, the members of the cult and from the authorities overzealous try to manage their activities that ultimately result into violence.  At given moments such as this it may be believed by them that it is the duty of the sacred group to arise and fight for what is believed to be the truth and to wreak on its enemies vengeance (Oommen, 2001, pp. 79).

Several reasons have been given by some researchers as to why an individual or a group of people may rationalize violence on the others.  Early childhood has been said to be one of the contributing factors towards making an individual to be more brutal or violent on the others. The empathy that is found on the people can not be developed to child that has been brought up with no loving care. Psychological humiliation, abuse, corporal punishment contributes to the most of the modern racism, religious differences, psychopaths, fascism, ant-Semitism. If two children happen to be brought up during different time periods of their life and in different religious traditions, can lead to different emotional feelings or empathy development. This can make the two individuals to justify differently on the proposed death sentences over the lives of given people or individual. Violence legitimacy by the two children can be based on the personal quest, for orthodoxy and certainty in belief may assist to offer a better understanding of the connection between the violence and the religion. Some researches that have been done by social scientists indicate that, religion has ceased from mainstreaming life and thus can not be termed as the real conflict cause. It is not a must that a religion begins or starts a war, but religion may turn out to be of great help when it comes to the intensification, maintenance, and dragging out of any violence or war. The religion in this case becomes more vital than any of the secular idea towards the war. It has been found to be very hard for any secular ideological system to instill uncompromising, absolute, unyielding alliance, and the traditional hallmark obedience of monotheistic religions (Malory, 2008, pp. 150).

Even the most held irrational and fervently secular ideologies would be pressed hard to come up with the zealotry which has featured most of the religions over many millennia in quite many solutions. The most troubling and the strongest example is that of the war that has been there between the Palestinians and the Israelis. Two countries claims that their religion advocates for peace and each can offer a solution to the ongoing impasse. Four decades back the trouble between two secular tribes amounted to a dispute of territory. Many of the leaders of Palestinian were Marxists or Christian. The ardent fanatics most of them live away from the holy land. For the Muslims the heaped indignities on the Palestinians are involved in the systematic Islam attacks that must be done to the unknown end. Concerning the war that exist between the two states based on the religion ground, the secular Jews needed to have focused clearly on the area setting for the Jews religious history. In the modern society it is well witnessed that the religion has become a very vital component than it used to be in those old days; at the same moment the opportunities for peace negotiation compromise and the settlement has dropped. This do not happen by coincidence, that the peace negotiators are the finally the secular leaders and actors rather than the religion authorities and leaders. If all the religions preaches peace, then the big question is that, why are not rabbis, priest, and the imams at the first line in building the peace. The subject of politics in our case is the negotiated peace settlement and the compromises, where the game name is the compromise in achieving the possible interests. Compromise is not the scripture and the dogma religious subject. This has been the attributing factor to more violence in those cases where the religion gets much involved in conflicts. Even getting a solution to such violence becomes much harder than any if secular ideologies where applied to solve the problem. It is for the above reasons that we can say that religion has got a direct connection to violence and war. It is not for the reason the violence and the war are brought in by the religion, but because the religion makes it possible for particular ideology by the atheists. Ideology certainty is commonality that is strong between the communists and the fascists have. It offers an opportunity for them to kill people who are innocent in large numbers due to that it easy for them to say that you are wrong and we are right and thus they justify that they can kill, exile, arrest or harass others. Religion itself is a mental system of construction, an ideology, due to that there are no sorts of any gods. When the actions that are done in religions are compared with those of communism all are the same, the difference between the  two is only that in religion what matters most is afterlife, while the communism who are concerned most on the material things, it is only this life that maters most (Edwards, 2004, pp. 82).

The historical reality is that despite the ideology or the religion, those who have got absolutist beliefs who have been found to engage in serious crimes,  those people who will not firmly keep any of their ideas or word questioning who are willing the most to kill other people they are not agreeing with. Religion may not specifically facilitate brutality, but makes it easier. This is because unlike the communism, the religion has a god than can not be questioned over certain issues. This is the communist rabid that could be never reasoned with. Though it has been denied by most leaders of the religious groups that their religions do promote violence, the religion based violence is based on misconduct form on the adherents’ part and that the claims that religion is the violence source is just a paradox since the religion preaches peace to its believers. The history of inter connection that exist between the violence and the religion indicates that there is indeed connection between the violence and religion. Violence may occur as a result of religious intolerance where the religion text may promote the intolerance among the believers of that particular religion. Therefore we can say that the current crisis of violence which are occurring have got connection with the religion (Edwards, 2004, pp. 83).
