Creative Writing: Homeless Essays

I never thought I would ever be in this predicament. I never thought that my own mother would kick me out of my home, my home where my mum raised me and feed me for 16 years, where she used to call my name sweetly, Joshua. Well, I have thought about it before. It was the main threat my stepdad, Doug used against me whenever I pissed him off. And I pissed him off every day. Maybe I was better off on the streets away from him; well that’s what I like to think. I turned back and gave my old home one last look before I walked away, shoulders hunched as I dragged my blue backpack across the sidewalk.

It hardly weighed anything with just my school uniform inside it and my wallet that probably contained about twenty bucks, but I had no strength to be able to carry it. I felt so defeated. So lonely. Not knowing what to do or where to go I stopped at the park close by my house. It was full of families having picnics and children running around the place. The scene started a small pain in my stomach that erupted when it made me realise how lonely I actually was. My mother wouldn’t help me, she let my step-dad chuck me right out, literally.

I had no friends at all, no other family members. No one to go to, no one to help me. After people watching for what seemed forever, the families started to disperse. The sun had gone down and the world around me was darkening by the seconds. I managed to find a long bench to rest on, it wasn’t very comfortable. The hard wood hurt my back and a few splinters caught on my skin. It wasn’t much but it was all I had for now. *** The next day I had school. My uniform was all crumpled and dirty from being stuffed in my bag all night.

Despite it being only one night my hair was messy and greasy and I didn’t smell too good either. I tried as much as I could to avoid attention which wasn’t that hard, people rarely noticed the losers anyway. I didn’t hang out with anybody at lunch. I sat in the back of the class. I managed to go unseen for most of the week at school. Until my teachers realised that something was wrong. One Thursday, I had walked into class late. People were filing out when I walked in. My homeroom teacher, Mr Lokoso, gave my appearance a frown. I was as dirty as I ever was.

Oil basically dripped from my hair, my skin had dirt smudged into it and my uniform had definitely seen better days. He came up to me and started to ask the obvious questions. Why I was late, why I was so unclean, what was happening to me? I just lied to him and told him that I haven’t had enough time to clean my clothes. That I had slept in and was just tired all the time. That nothing was wrong with me. Lies after lies just piled on. Despite me having poor lying skills and the fact that he didn’t look entirely convinced he dismissed me with a warning not to be late again.

I could see in his eyes though that he knew something was wrong. But I didn’t care, I didn’t need any help. That day I also realised I had no money left. So I did something I never imagined myself doing. Being so damn desperate, I went around the street begging people for money; nobody was generous enough to give me any though. I was really frustrated after a scowling businessman pushed me out of his way and into the gutter. Everywhere I went and everyone I asked didn’t give me anything. That’s when my desperation started to take over and stealing became my only option.

I was pretty good at it. Pickpocketing came naturally to me. It was quite an easy task to bump into someone and stealthily sneak my hand into their pockets, taking whatever was in there. I only got caught once and I just ran away when the man realised. After a few weeks of picking small items I then decided to take it up a notch and mug somebody. It was a harder thing to do but pickpocketing only got me so much. I saw a man in a suit that was perfect for my first time. He looked quite weak and puny as he strolled his way up the street.

I snuck up behind him and when he turned right into an empty street I grabbed him and smashed him against the building next to us. As I took his wallet and everything else on him that looked valuable I realised the moaning man looked familiar. When I dragged him under the streetlamp to have a better look in case I missed something I realised who it was. And I was so shocked I dropped Mr Lokoso on the floor and took a step back. He looked at me with a shocked face realising who I was. I didn’t know what to do; I didn’t know what he was going to do.

I freaked and run away just as he called my name in the darkness. *** I didn’t go to school for a few days, I thought it was better off not going at all but then I thought to myself that if I didn’t go I wouldn’t be properly educated and I wouldn’t have anything to do. I would be homeless for the remainder of my life if I didn’t do anything for myself. I was just over it and I decided to go to school and tell Mr Lokoso what is happening with my life. I was beside myself. I was at school and I was even dirtier than before.

I went looking for Mr Lokoso, I didn’t want to but I had too. When I found him he was talking to the principal. He saw me and he smiled at me. I was puzzled, why did he smile at me? “Joshua” he said. “Are you okay? ” “Yeah, I’m fine” I said knowing that wasn’t. “Are you sure? ” said the principal with a hint of concern in his voice. That is when I broke down and told them what had happened. I told them about my parents throwing me out, about how I was trying to get money, about where I slept and where I was living. They were shocked, they couldn’t believe it.
