Authority and Power Felicia Flake Everest University Online Police officers possess both authority and power. Authority is the right to command and the right or power to enforce rules or give orders and is the basis of social control in a community. Police officers possess this type of authority when signed on to do their jobs. Power is a source of social influence and context manipulation of objective facts, such as actions or results of another person’s behavior.

The police officers need to possess social control in order to handle everyday things that go on in the community. Sometimes the officers will need the communities help with different things and crimes so these things go hand and hand. If the police officers don’t have the communities help with certain things it’s almost impossible to solve some crimes without proper eye witnesses.

Social control and duties of citizens are linked to authority and power of police officers because if the police do not have control, which would mean they don’t have respect for authority by the citizens. Law is linked with authority and power because the police officers have to abide by the law and still be able to use their authority and power to influence the community, without breaking the law.

In conclusion, authority is the right to command and enforce rules or give orders. Power is a form of social influence resulting from another person’s behavior. Authority and power are linked with law, social control and duties of citizens, because the officers have to abide by the law while still enforcing authority, while using their power.
