A small part of my job is conflict resolution. This requires me to assess situations, interview people, and make difficult decisions on a daily basis. I have to be able to discern between fact and fiction. The information that I gather affects people in the workplace, and at home. It can also affect productivity for others on the job, and the over all welfare of the company. I have to think about all sides of the situation, and leave my personal feelings out of the situation, before I can act on the information that I have obtained, which can be really difficult at times, because we live in a relatively small town, everyone knows each other.

My decisions can ultimately have an affect on our business financially as well. If I make a decision that goes against federal or state law, it could land our company in the court system. Sometimes I will also seek the advice of either another member of our Human Resource team, or even seek legal advice before handing down a decision, writing up or terminating an employee. Strategies to Develop Critical Thinking Now that you identified your current stage as a critical thinker, it is necessary to adopt strategies to develop your thinking. Of the nine trategies you read about this week, choose three that you can begin to practice. Describe critical thinking and reflect on your current stage of critical thinking and your identified strategies. Determine what you can do to develop stronger critical thinking skills. Critical thinking to me is the ability to think through any situation, and think about the consequences of our thoughts before putting it into action. The ability to know what the consequences of our decisions before we make them, is a great ability. I also believe that the ability to think critically, to a certain degree, comes with time, age, and having lived through certain situations in our lives.

Having learned from past mistakes, or helping friends through difficulty in their own lives also gives us different perspectives to add to our decision making process. I think that we as humans have a tendency to want to make people happy, not to deal with conflict, and second guess every decision that we make. I know in my own personal life, that my worst enemy most of the time is myself, because I always think about the what if’s or the negative of situations.

If I had only done this, would I have come away with a different or more positive result. It is easy to beat yourself up over wrong decisions, and only natural to dwell on wrong decisions, and ask, “what if. ” It is also important to know when to let go and ask yourself, “what did you learn from this wrong decision, and is it an opportunity for personal growth? ” I think that is why starting a journal would be good for me, it would give me a point of reference to reflect on.
