Racial groups interact at work, school, while shopping, and other normal day to day activities. There are some groups who gravitate towards each other without considering that the people they gravitate towards are of a different race. If you are like me, I am one of those people who enjoys being around people who are different from me. The negative interactions take place when a group of people from one race judges another race for one reason or another. Are there existing social inequities based on race? Why or why not?
Social inequality is described as societies where specific groups do not have equal social status based on ethnicity, race, and other characteristics. Since this question relates to race I will try to stay on the topic. There are existing social inequities based on race. Ethnicity relates to factors that include nationality, culture, ancestry, language, and beliefs. Minority groups have to experience social inequities quite often. Minority groups have to deal with racial profiling, serving longer prison sentences, inadequate healthcare, unfair housing discrimination, and the list continues.
Minorities have a tougher time finding gainful employment; they also are discriminated against in schools. What do you believe to be the causes of racial prejudice and discrimination in today’s society? There is no one reason why racial prejudice and discrimination is caused. For the younger generations, it’s most likely a learned behavior. Children are like sponges soaking in everything they see and hear. Some parents may notice that their children act differently towards certain races and do nothing to correct the problem.
Other parents teach their children the opposite of being prejudice towards another race. Racial prejudice and discrimination may also be exist because of bad experiences or plain old ignorance. Some people choose to not deal with an entire race just because of something one person or a few people from the race did. Ignorance is not bothering to learn about a race and just judging them for being different since most races are comfortable being with their own race.
