Many Americans today are fighting obesity. They long for a quick fix, one that comes easy without pain and sweat. But for most that is not a possibility. There are many diet pills out on the market today that claim to melt the fat away, nothing has to change. You don’t have to diet, you don’t have to exercise, just take a pill and it all goes away. While there are many pills that seem to help lose weight, and help in the interim, it does not help in the aspect of health, wellness, and physical fitness, those of which are the roots of successful weight loss.
Diet pills, although sound nice and appealing, are strictly Placebos. (pla-ce-bo, something of no intrinsic remedial value that is used to appease or reassure another. )(Fralax , 2012, 1. A. ) It is understandable why diet pills are so successful in persuading people. It is possible to lose usually around ten pounds while taking a diet pill. Unfortunately that is also normal when a person first starts their weight-loss journey without pills. It is the pounds after that first ten pounds that are often the hardest to get rid of and the diet pills won’t touch.
That is where the term placebo comes in. A diet pill is a pill that helps people feel like they are gaining ground and feel like they are in control of their weight-loss. The diet pill is a tool that mentally “reinforces an individual’s expectation to lose weight” (Fralax , 2012, 1. a. ) When a weight-loss ad tells you that you don’t have to change your diet to lose weight, you can assure yourself, that pill will not work. As much as we as people love our food, hence the obesity, we must watch what we eat in order to make a change in the scale.
While taking a diet pill, you might feel less hungry and notice you start losing weight. That is because weight loss pills are designed to suppress hunger, but weight loss will stop very shortly into the journey if there is still high fats and loads of carbs in the foods that are eaten. It is very important to eat a well-balanced meal that is lower in fats and carb content to continue losing weight and gain health benefits. While the pills will not work solely on their own, it is possible to take healthy supplements along with a good diet to gain maximum benefits.
The benefits of a good diet far outweigh the one reason of weight-loss. That is topping on the cake. The U. S. Department of Health and Services provide guidelines to follow for better health, and these health benefits can prevent “chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, and some cancers” (Bryant & Green, 2010, p. 168, para. 2). Taking a diet pill alone to promote weight loss is inadequate. Without the foundation of good health, weight will continue to be an issue. Next we have the issue of taking the diet pill and not exercising.
One of the biggest reasons to avoid diet pills is because they are used as a replacement for physical activity, but without physical activity, an individual will never reach the full potential of their health and still not lose all the weight. Many people use diet pills as their last resort because nothing else has allowed them to lose weight. Popping a pill in one’s mouth sounds so much easier than working out at the gym. However, research indicates that physical activity is essential to good health in many other ways than maintaining weight.
Again, while you may lose a few pounds, unless you are starving yourself, you can not lose weight and keep it off in good health without exercise. Exercise is the first and foremost important factor to weight loss and health. You can even say, if you exercise you might even be able to eat more of a diverse diet with higher fat content and still lose weight. But ultimately it is recommended that you have a good, clean diet and regular exercise to permote the best health and weight loss results. What exercise can do that the pill cannot is quite simple.
Exercise creates muscle, tones, burns calories and fat, and transforms the body into a healthy machine. How does the pill accomplish this? It cannot. With exercise you get the benefits of feeling strong, feeling energy that is natural and created by your own doing. Exercise gets rid of any not-so-funny bulges, bumps and lumps that the fat and skin may cause. Exercise, even at it’s minimum, makes healthy changes in our body. Now we have not just the issue of weight loss, which a diet pill can at times be helpful with, but there is the issue of health.
Diet pills are known for creating health issues. In order to establish long lasting weight loss we must have good heath, which in turn, promotes better lifestyle and less illnesses and diseases. When we are healthy, it allows our body to feel stronger, work better in burning fat, and fight bacteria. This also leads us into wellness. Wellness contains a larger spectrum of health issues. Wellness also has to deal with mental health. When you have a good clean diet, and good exercise, your mental state is greatly improved.
A person can feel better about themselves, fight depression and anxiety, and feel happier in general about life. Diet pills do not help with this. I myself would prefer to feel the strength and self-satisfaction of my own handy work. Also feeling the satisfaction of weight loss gained by one’s own determination is more likely to create longer lasting results. People who fight hard to accomplish their goals are a lot less likely to give up. Finally, while a diet pill may give short term satisfaction, the ultimate choice would have to be good dieting and exercise.
Supplements such as some form of diet pill may be taken during dieting and exercise to give an individual a stronger since of success, but the driving factor is the satisfaction of losing weight, gaining strength, improving health, and allowing for a stronger mental state. Regular physical activity improves health and well-being by improving quality of life, reducing the risk of dying prematurely, promoting psychological well-being, as well as “decreasing feelings of depression and anxiety, helping to build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints, and helping with weight management.
It also decreases the risk of colon cancer, lowering blood pressure in people with hypertension, reducing the risk of developing high blood pressure, aiding in the control and prevention of diabetes, and decreasing the risk of dying from coronary heart disease. As little as 30 minutes of physical activity every day can lead to all of the above benefits”( Bryant & Green, 2010, p. 67). Weight loss is only one of the many benefits of physical activity. When people take diet pills they usually have little or no exercise in their lives, which means that they do not get any of the other benefits of physical activity.
Diet pills users often see rapid weight loss without exercising, so they quit exercising altogether. What dieters do not realize is how important exercising is for their body functions. The pill users are so excited to lose weight that they don’t notice the negative affects diet pills have on their body. A sedentary lifestyle can lead to many health complications, so it is important to stay active and benefit form physical activity. If there was not such a desire for quick fixes in society, people would slow down and think about the long term and incorporate exercise and dieting into their life on a continual basis.
