All visitors have to be escorted whilst on school premises and they have to be signed in at reception, where we have a list of all our schools first aiders, and wear a visitor’s badge. Equipping students with skill and making them aware of how to stay safe. As we strive to succeed in these aims we are creating a safe environment in which our student can learn and develop.

At MOCS our Child Protection Officer updates her list periodically to ensure that all our training and the training of new staff is current for both Safeguarding and Child Protection. Any new criteria that we NEED to know about is addressed at one of our regular full staff meetings, if the update cannot wait until our review date. We have forms kept in the staffroom for reporting any suspected Child protection incidents. The counselling facility is for students who need to talk about problems that arise in their lives that they find difficult to deal with on their own.

At MOCS we have a professional counsellor on site for the students to book an appointment with and this has proved to be a very popular service. MOCS policy for counselling clearly states it is for staff, students and parents. From this I gather it to be in conjunction with the student, if they seem to have constant problems with a specific member of staff or if they just don’t understand what the staff member requires of them. Or maybe they perceive that they have a problem with one or more of their parents and feel talking to them with the benefit of the counsellor present will help.

Sometimes it just takes talking things out with an unbiased person and someone with specialist training is clearly beneficial to our Students. The system is that each student requiring a visit to the counsellor will be given an appointment and this does not require parental involvement. Drug Policy, this policy and PSHE & Citizenship Policy overlap as the rules to be adhered to are in conjunction with the PSHE & Citizenship Policy. The purpose of a Drugs policy is to protect staff and students alike so this is a dual policy action; it is pupil welfare and staff procedures.

It is also to give a clear statement of where the school stands on the subject of drugs. This policy is also to determine how we, as staff at the school, respond to and deal with drug incidents and to clarify our legal responsibilities. What we perceive as a drug is a substance which when taken into the body changes the way we act and the way we see things. Drugs can be legal substances such as alcohol, volatile substances and prescribed drugs, as well as illegal substances. Students are not permitted to use these at school (unless they are medication prescribed by the doctor and kept in accordance with the correct procedures).

Likewise, it would be unethical and a disciplinary offence if a member of staff were using these substances at school or even prior to coming to work and was still under the influence of any substance which would affect the way they conduct themselves in respect of their job. The PSHE & Citizenship Policy include how to look after themselves, how to keep themselves safe and this includes on the internet, safety is a problem we must keep on top of and not get complacent about as young people do not always see the danger in this media.

Attendance Policy, this policy states that students must attend school regularly, have the mind set to begin learning and to be punctual this is in line with national policies. All registers are taken in the morning and must be prompt so that the attendance officer can check and record all absences. We promote regular and punctual attendance by having in place reward to be used with the students and we work closely with parents. If parents do not ensure that their child attends school regularly then they are committing an offence.

This clearly comes under policies relating to Pupil Welfare, in order to be safe some responsible adult needs to be looking out for them. Data protection policy, this is a national policy which affects everyone who store data for any reason. This affects MOCS as all those who store data for the school have to be aware of all aspects of the data protection act and ensure that they comply with it. This means that they will have to make sure they read and understand the data protection police for our school which the governors and headmaster have commissioned in order to be sure that they comply with the mandate.

All staff has information that comes under this policy and they all have to be accountable for what happens to it and ensuring that it is only used for the purpose it was collected. Information within the MOCS is compartmentalised, it is held by one person in the area where the information is being used, this ties in with confidentiality and need to know. For example SEN information is held, in accordance with the rules and regulations set out in the data protection policy, by the SEN Coordinator, and she restricts access and ensures that it is stored properly.

This information is shared with the student’s head of year but they have no hard copies of the information it is not required, although access can be granted. Health and Safety has been made law and it is the responsibility of the employer for the health and safety of everyone who works for them, and in the case of an Educational establishment they are also responsible for the health and safety of anyone who visits or attends the facility, for example students, parents and other professionals who may need to visit for whatever reason.

Where the care of a student is at risk the duty of care for the student takes president over anything else. The employer should have a health and safety officer who ensures that the school is not in violation of the health and safety act and who compiles a health and safety police that is clear and concise then brings them to the attention of all employees. Employees also have a duty to abide by the health and safety policies and take reasonable care of him or herself at work, they also are not to interfere with or misuse anything that would breech health and safety.

Each year we have an independent inspection from the Health and Safety Executive and any proposals made have to be completed or the facility will be shut down. National Government (Department for Education) directs a group of people who decide and develop policy and practice for education. They decide on what will be the contents of our National Curriculum, they decide on legislation, attendance, truancy, they draw up the education policy and the Early Years Foundation which schools and nurseries operate.

They also look at developing the quality of service that children are offered always trying to improve on the five main outcomes under the “Every Child Matters”. This entitles every child to be healthy, free from physical, mental emotional and sexual torment or abuse. They have the right to be Safe, free from violence, maltreatment, bullying and neglect. Children have the right to enjoy and achieve, they should attend school getting the most out of life and learning skills for adulthood. Every child has the right to make a positive contribution.

Children should be involved in decision making and be part and support the local community exhibiting positive behaviour in and out of school. Lastly they have a right to achieve economic well-being. They should be able to go to College, obtain training or apprentiship be able to go to University in order to fulfil their full potential without being held back due to economic disadvantage. These five outcomes are the basis for a lot of the work done with young people and Government is always trying to improve on them in order that we do not become complacent and another child is seriously hurt.

National Government give the directive for provisions for Special Educational Needs in order that they are not discriminated against. They provide funding for research into education- based projects. In short they put policies and laws into place to cover everything to do with children and education. This is also part of our inclusion policy which means that we give every student the right to attend our school and we will do our best to help them access the curriculum offering all the help we can, this includes SEN students, ADHD students, Looked after students, students with English as an additional language, Students with disabilities and those with behaviour issues.

We have a fantastic SEN department which includes some SEN teacher and Teaching Assistants who are more than aware of the problems these students face on a daily basis. Strategies and help are put into place to help these students succeed; this includes a buddy system to help our EAL students. At exam time the SEN department must ensure that the students that are entitled to extra time have already been allocated this and if they require a reader, Scribe or laptop that the arrangements have already been made in accordance with the exam board regulations.

At MOCS in order to ensure that school is a good environment for learning we have and in house councillor who the students can book in to chat with to help them deal with the life issues that they are struggling with. Sometimes this can be looking after a sick parent and siblings, other times it could be that parents are split and they do not see the other parent, many reasons make young people anxiety and it is good to have a safe confidential place to talk about these things.

Another service that MOCS offer is Anger Management, when young people feel that they are not listened to or that what is happening is not fair some students find it very hard to control their anger. At MOCS these students are given designated times to attend sessions with a specially trained person to help them stay in control of their own emotions, and if necessary they are given a “safe place” that they can go to when or if they think things are getting out of control.

Finance is not to be a barrier to education either and as with all schools there are Bursary policies in place that can be utilised in some cases to stop this being a problem to the students learning. These articles tie in with the “Every Child Matters policy,” ensuring that every child has the same rights and that they are heard, that we attempt to reduce teenage pregnancy, promoting good health and are also incorporated into our ethos mission aims and values for everyday life at MOCS.
