Health care is the largest industry in the United States today, providing more than 14 million jobs across the country - Externship Essay introduction. It’s no secret that the health care field is growing at an expeditious rate and the industry can be referred to as recession proof. According to recent numbers from the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, seven of the 20 fastest growing occupations are health care related. Health care will generate 3 million new wage and salary jobs between 2006 and 20016, more than any other industry. This was one of the main reasons I considered upon choosing a new career path.
As a graduating student of the healthcare information technology program at ASA Institute, I had to complete a 15 week externship at the Downtown Integrated Medical Services healthcare Facility located in downtown Brooklyn in order to obtain my Associates degree. This program provided me with an informative, exciting and challenging alternative, being I am a student who is seeking employment in the healthcare industry but opted not want to work on the clinical side of the industry, but can still feel like I am contributing to making society a healthier place for all of us as humans.

The staff was very knowledgeable and courteous to assisting me whenever I needed help with a task, and made the patients feel as if they were more than a patient in this family friendly environment.
On a day to day basis, I was responsible for organizing, filing, and pulling medical records. This required me to work independently. File copy in the chart and mail original. • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times as per HIPPA • Maintained daily schedule for physicians and print out daily. • Follows up on appointment no shows. • Verifies insurance information. Obtains signature and copies of insurance cards. Receives and records patients’ co-payments for the visit. Completes referrals forms and obtaining precertification/authorizations when required.
Some of the most important things I took with me from this experience is the professional manner in which the staff conducted themselves in adhering to OSHA regulations, JCAHO standards, patient relations standards and telephone courtesy standards. As a future health information management professional, the knowledge and skills I attained during my externship, and in future endeavors within the field of informatics science, will be to ensure that I’m fulfilling my dream of improving health care through high-quality information.
