Gender roles do most often identify with chromosomal sex. There are many different gender roles and stereotypes. Men and women have been taught to act and portray themselves in a particular manor depending on the history and culture they belong too.

Women have been expected to have certain traits such as gentleness, dependency, kindness, helpfulness, patience, and submissiveness. Women are also seen as emotional and irrational. Females are seen as caretakers and in many cultures are not allowed to work outside the home and are expected to raise families and to do the house work. Traits that are attributed to men are toughness, gentlemanliness, protectiveness, independent, assertive, and competent. In many cultures and points in time through history men have been expected to provide for their family by working, and to protect their family at all costs.

There is a great amount of sexism because of traits that are attributed to stereo types of what is masculine or famine and how people from each gender should act. A woman is perceived as sensitive and that is ok with the majority of society, but if a man is sensitive many people will consider him a sissy because he expresses his emotions. A woman acting in a polite manner is expected but a man who acts in the same manner is considered weak and passive. If a man acts in an assertive manner it is considered normal but a woman would be considered pushy because a woman is often expected to be submissive to others.

There are many people who have many traits from both sides who are more neutral. There are also gender roles that rotate around sex. As children people learn that a man should approach a woman in order to initiate sexual activity, not the woman approaching the man. Women are expected to wait until they are approached by a man and to thoroughly screen their suitors in order to make a good choice. Men are considered to be more sexually aggressive and have a higher number of sexual partners than women, and women are seen to be more passive. Many stereo types lead to the belief that women hould let the man decide the choice, timing, and sequence of sexual positioning. I see myself to be a more feminine person in general, even though I do have some masculine traits. In my personal life I am more passive. I am compassionate and I am also a care taker. I am a very caring and giving person who seems to be passive in most situations. I do fall under stereotypes about women. I do the majority of the house cleaning, cooking, and taking care of children. While I am at work is when my masculine traits begin to show. I become more assertive and aggressive in order to get the job done.

The job that I do is working at an assisted living facility caring for the dietary needs of the people we serve, so I am still taking care of people even while I am at work. Over all I feel that I am more feminine in my appearance and with all of my personality traits. Gender identity is the way a person feels and associates themselves with their sexual structure. Just because a person is more feminine or masculine does not mean they identify with that sex or that they want to be a member of the opposite sex.
