And of course try to start a local car-pool between friends and coworkers. A few simple adjustments to your daily routine can help you become a more cautious consumer.

You can start off by using less plastics, take advantage of reusable grocery bags, they’re even coming out with reusable, dishwasher safe plastic bags. For water you can use a purifier for your tap water instead of purchasing water bottles, and by doing so you’re using less, helping save the amount of plastics contaminating the environment and our oceans. And as an alternative for tossing those old bottles and cans out in the recycling take them in yourself and get some of your money back for recycling them.

Growing your own fruits and vegetables and planning your meals ahead of time you can save money on food and conserve gas with fewer trips to the grocery store. Also, when food is tossed out, instead of composted it releases methane gas contributing to global warming, and composting food helps the soil retain moisture, ultimately saving you money on your water bill. For the items we can’t produce ourselves buying in bulk is less costly in the long run and you get more of the product and less packaging in the end.

Most people don’t realize how much of an impact the little things that we do every day, have on our environment, let alone how much they can reduce the amount of waste they produce while saving their money. The average person creates four and a half pounds of waste every day, and two minutes of our showers use as much water as one person in Africa uses in a day for everything they need, including bathing, cleaning and cooking. We don’t need to drastically change our lifestyles to do our part in helping maintain our environment, and when we can save money in a time like this, why not?
