Government and Political Leaders
Throughout history the world has seen numerous forms of governments. With each and every type of government whether they are looked at as being good or bad we have gained something even if it was just the knowledge of the way we do not want things be. Also with the different forms of governments we have met different political leaders. Just as with different governments the different political leaders have taught us something as well and even some of the worst political leaders did some good too.
One of the oldest forms of government is a monarchy. A monarchy is when you have kings and queens. In a monarchy the leader is the head of state for life. Monarchs ruled the world for a long time. Britten is one of the few states that still recognize a monarch today, but the monarch does not completely rule the state parliament does. The British monarch has also had some of the most successful and most interesting political leaders in history. Queen Elizabeth I was one of Britten’s most influential and beloved leaders.

Born of King Henry VIII and Anne Boylen, and because of her very controversial parents she had a shaky childhood. Despite the indiscretions of her mother and the hate she felt from her half-sister she still became an amazing queen. During her time as queen she “saw the advancement of England as a military might, restored the Anglican faith, and ruled her country effectively through council for 45 years in a time when women were still being looked upon as being inferior to men. ”(Queen Elizabeth) Queen Elizabeth mad such a mark on history that she became known as “England’s greatest monarch. (Queen Elizabeth) Although it is rare that we see true ruling monarchs in today’s society they did have a great impact on the history of government. Monarchs also had a huge effect on America’s government, because of their desire to have a government completely free of monarch rule. This map shows present day monarchies as of 2009. Although some monarchs could have been viewed as dictators they were not. Dictatorship is a form of government all its own. “In a dictatorship you have a dictator. This person has absolute and complete control over the government.
The dictator is not responsible and cannot be held responsible for what he or she does to the general population. ”(Types of Government) Every dictator throughout history has been evil and unsuccessful. One of the most famous modern day dictators was Saddam Hussein. Hussein ruled Iraq from 1979-2003. In the 24 years that he ruled he did so with terror. He even executed the entire Iraqi football (soccer) team when they lost. Just as with all evil super villains Hussein was taken down. American forces captured Hussein in 2003.
Hussein stood trail by his own people and was found guilty. He was hung on December 30th, 2006. The down fall of Hussein was just another example of how dictatorships will never work. This map show present day dictatorships. The green on the map are free; yellow is partially free; purple (blue) is not free. Another form of government that has caused a lot of controversy is Socialism. Socialism is a system in which people as a whole, and not individuals control and own all property. People give up their rights as individuals for what they think is the greater good.
Socialism is a form of government that goes hand in hand with communism most of the time. One of history’s most famous socialists is Adolf Hitler. Hitler was elected leader of Germany. He is best known for the terror that unleashed on the Jews as well as being one of the main causes of World War II. There is no doubt that Hitler was and evil person with extremely skewed views, but he did do a few things that did help Germany. He did do things such as reduce unemployment and Germany to reclaim the title of being a super power after their significant lose in World War I.
It was also Hitler who built the Autobahns in Germany. If it had not been for Hitler’s totalistic way and his crazy view of the Jews he may have been able to be a good leader. By studying Hitler it could be said that a socialist government could be very successful it all just depends on the type of leader the state has. A map of countries (using present-day borders) that have constitutionally declared themselves to be “socialist”, under any definition of the term, at some point in their history. They are color-coded for the duration of their claims to be socialist: Red more than 60 years
Orange between 50 and 60 years Yellow between 40 and 50 years Green between 30 and 40 years Blue between 20 and 30 years Black between 10 and 20 years Purple less than 10 years This is a map of communist states as of 2008. The communist states are marked in red. The last form of government is Democracy. Democracy by definition “is a system of government where the power is given to the people. ”(Types of Government) Democracy is the most popular form of government, because the people have the power to make the government the way they want it.
The people have control over who they put in office, and they have the power to take people out of office. The biggest problem with a democracy is that in places like the United States the people do not always take control of the power given to them under the constitution. In other countries such as Germany there is almost always a decent turn out on Election Day. Democratic political leaders are some of the most beloved historical leaders but not all of them are so great. Hearing names like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and John F.
Kennedy it gives most people a smile or at least a good feeling. All three of these men did wonderful things for the United States. On the other hand hearing a name like Richard Nixon and Rod Blagojevich most people’s first thoughts turn to scandal and corruption. Nixon is best known for the Watergate scandal and Blagojevich is known for trying to sell President Obama’s seat in the senate after he was election President of the United States. Just as will all form of government Democracy has had its down sides, but ultimately Democracy is the greatest form of government.
Democratic Governments 1945-1995 This chart shows the decrease in voter turnout trends. The most important thing a person can do is learn about all types of governments and different political leaders and not just the good but the bad is well. If people study the history of the government they can learn why things when wrong with other governments and not repeat their mistakes. By studying past political leader, even the evil ones like Hitler, people can also learn a lot. Remembering that even the worst may have done some good in-between there terrorism.
