In Invictus Nelson Mandela has the struggle of bringing a country together, Skeeter in The Help has the issue of writing the story of “the help” without getting in trouble with the law and last but not least Guido has the struggle of keeping his family together and alive during the holocaust. Discrimination towards Jews was very prominent during WWII. In Life is Beautiful it is shown the emotional burden it puts on Guido and Dora. So, instead of telling him the truth Guido tells him, “Not allowed sings are the latest trend!” Another instance of emotional struggle is when Dora is in the concentration camp with the other women. She is told that all elderly and children are sent to the gas chambers to be killed. Like any other mother this creates fear and worry. She knows that Joshua is there but the question now is whether he is still alive or not. This state of always wondering just adds to the hardships of being there.

Along with emotional struggle, Jews faced many physical struggles as well during WWII. The biggest example in the movie is Guido’s determination of staying alive, providing for Joshua and keeping his son happy. Everyday even though he is worked close to death, he always comes back with a smile to up the illusion that it is all one big game to Joshua. He also would save whatever of the little food he was given to feed Joshua. Even though he had been working all day and his body needed what it could take, he put his son’s needs ahead of his own. In the end Guido gives up his own life so that Joshua may live.

Even though most of the physical struggles many Jews faced during the holocaust, for the few who came out alive, were temporary many were left with life-long struggles. In the movie Guido gives up his life so that Joshua may live and even though the movie ends and does not show it, Joshua will have struggles of growing up without his father. His father won’t be there to give him advice on girls, play games with him, or teach him how to shave. Also, losing his father so young he won’t have many memories to look back on. He may even question himself sometimes wondering how different his life would be if his father hadn’t died, and many other questions that may haunt him the rest of his life.

Even though all three movies show stories of great struggle, Life is Beautiful has a greater impact on an audience causing a true understanding of what those during the holocaust went through. Unlike the other movies, Life is Beautiful not only shows emotional struggle but also shows physical and life lasting struggle making a stronger connection with the audience that Invictus and The Help could not do. In conclusion Life is Beautiful shows exactly what the title says, that even in times of struggle, life is beautiful.
