The Master of Science (MSc) program in Innovative Hospitality Management (60 ECTS) is the result of an international collaboration between TSI-Tourism Sant Ignacio (Barcelona, Spain) and the Hotel Management School Maastricht (Maastricht, the Netherlands). Author: Beda Fabian Lyimo Supervisor: Anders Hederstierna Department: School of Management, Blekinge Institute of Technology Course: Master’s thesis in business administration, 15credits (ECTS) Background and Problem Discussion: The tourism industry has been considered to be an important sector in Tanzania for many years whereby it has strong positive effects on the economic development of the country. The positive impact of tourism on the host country is in areas such as foreign exchange earnings, employment opportunities, poverty elimination, and provision of social services and improvement of the infrastructure.

However the current worldwide top agenda of the financial crisis has weakened the above efforts of the tourism industry towards the economic development of Tanzania. Therefore it is the researcher’s belief that there is a need to conduct an in depth study to scrutinize the impact of the financial crisis on the tourism industry in Tanzania. Purpose: This study will provide an insight into the tourism industry on how the current recession affects this sector.

This might help to create sufficient and sustainable measures on how to hedge against the crisis within the sector so as to boost the economic development of Tanzania. Method: The researcher conducted an empirical study by using both secondary and primary source of data from the tourism authorities as well as stakeholders in general. For the primary data the main instrument used was telephone interviews with the tourism officials in Tanzania while questionnaires were added to explore both domestic and international tourists’ views on the financial crisis on the tourism industry.

Both interview questions and questionnaires were designed using a semi-structured approach. Theory: The researcher explored theories which link tourism and economic development as there were no direct specific theories on tourism. Analysis: The analysis of the research findings was undertaken by using a qualitative approach to the data analysis whereby the impacts of the financial crisis on the tourism industry in Tanzania were discussed in depth.

Conclusion: The analysis showed that there are impacts of the financial crisis on the tourism industry in Tanzania. The analysis also showed that there are measures suggested to mitigate the situation however there is still a problem as most of these measures are not yet effectively implemented which could delay its significance, therefore the tourism sector could lose its potential to boost the economic development of Tanzania.

Due to these reasons the researcher provided recommendations and suggested areas for further research to enable an in depth study in the future. “Responsible Tourism is tourism which: • minimizes (same as minimizes (the only accepted spelling in North America))[2] negative economic, environmental and social impacts • generates greater economic benefits for local people and enhances the well being of host communities • improves working conditions and access to the industry involves local people in decisions that affect their lives and life chances • makes positive contributions to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage embracing diversity • provides more enjoyable experiences for tourists through more meaningful connections with local people, and a greater understanding of local cultural, social and environmental issues • provides access for physically challenged people • is culturally sensitive, encourages respect between tourists and hosts, and builds local pride and confidence • is integrate in the local ecosystem”.

Objectives of tourism development Tourism Development – Can be defined as the process of providing facilities and services for visitors to a destination in order to gain economic and other benefits Economic objects The economic objectives of tourism development include: Employment creation increasing foreign currency earnings Tourist contributions to the multiplier effect – the additional revenue created in an area as a result of tourism expenditure. Direct employment – occurs in hotels, airports, airlines, tour operators, travel agents, and tourist offices.

Indirect employment – occurs in industries that serve the travel and tourism industry. Environmental Objectives Environmental education – this is usually through visitor centres. this information helps the tourist understand the reasons for conservation and encourages them to respect the environment. Tourism and Its Effects on the Community Tourism is the largest industry in the world and the fact that it is still growing portrays a very bright future for the industry. Many countries have made billions out of this industry and are still earning more but to gain something, we have to lose something. In this essay I will discuss the effects of the tourism industry on the community taking into account important factors such as politics, economics, the environment and the historical factors. Tourism is the premier industry in many South Pacific countries.

Not only does it bring a considerable amount of foreign currency, it also provides employment to many people. Its economic benefits are unquestionable but an over dependence on it may cause the downfall of other industries and the livelihood of the people associated with it. Many countries, especially developing countries with little ability to explore other resources, have taken up tourism as a way to improve the economy. However, as a result their survival often has become dependent on customary tourism revenue arrival. 2.
