WHAT IS SOIL? Dust, dirt, foreign matter, tarnish and stains deposited on a surface are referred to as SOIL. DUST: Loose particles from the air It contains both organic and inorganic matters Organic matters: Human and animal hair, dead skin cells, particles of excreta, pollen from plants etc. Inorganic matters: Sand, dry earth DIRT: Dust held together firmly by moisture or grease on rough surfaces. TARNISH: Discolouring or deposition on a metal or alloy surface caused by chemical reaction with certain substance found in air, water and foodstuffs.

Entomologically clean: Surface should be free from harmful insects. Terminally clean: Surface should be sanitised against all kinds of pathogenic microbes. This standard is generally used in operation theatres and intensive care unit of hospitals.
