How Computers Have Revolutionized Our Lives

Working on this now. Computers: Arguably the Greatest Invention of All Time. For the past 20 years I have been fascinated with technology, specifically computers. Computers are a part of our everyday lives and most don’t realize this technology makes the world go round. I would venture to say that computers have contributed to our lives more so than Gutenberg’s printing press. Take a quick inventory of the things you own, your cell phone, microwave, television, printer, car, and IPod.

These electronics all have a computer that allows them to function properly and make your life easier or more enjoyable. Let’s learn together how computers have revolutionized our life as we know it. Not everyone may know what a computer is so I will give a brief summary of what exactly it is and its purpose. A computer is a general purpose device that can be programmed to carry out a finite set of arithmetic or logical operations. Since a sequence of operations can be readily changed, the computer can solve more than one kind of problem.

Conventionally, a computer consists of at least one processing element, typically a central processing unit (CPU) and some form of memory. The processing element carries out arithmetic and logic operations, and a sequencing and control unit that can change the order of operations based on stored information. Peripheral devices allow information to be retrieved from an external source, and the result of operations saved and retrieved. In other words a computer is a device that is designed to do what we tell it to do.

We give it commands that are mathematically calculated in a code called binary code. A Binary code is a way of representing text or computer processor instructions by the use of the binary number system’s two-binary digits 0 and 1. This is accomplished by assigning a bit string to each particular symbol or instruction. For example, abinary string of eight binary digits (bits) can represent any of 255 possible values and can therefore correspond to a variety of different symbols, letters or instructions.

I may even go so far as giving you this entire paper in Binary code. Now that we have a better understanding of what a computer is and does, lets discuss how we utilize this in our lives. For most of us when we think about a computer, we think of a lap top or desktop.

The general idea is we use computers for playing video games, browsing the web, listening to music, watching movies, doing homework, and stalking people on Facebook. While all these are true, there are about a million additional uses most of us never think about. Computers help us as individuals, business, and nations in many forms. We’re going to review how our lives are changed for the better in most cases and some times worse through the fields of medicine, science, business, and war to name a few.
