“Esteem needs include both self-esteem and the esteem of others. Self-esteem is the feeling that one is worthwhile, competent, and independent”. (Maslow and Abraham H, n.d.)

Esteem Needs

According to Maslow, most people motivated through learning when they engage themselves to achieve recognition and have an activity or activities that give an individual a sense of share. However, any kind of instability at this motivation level can lead in low self-esteem and complex situation. Nonetheless, there are two main levels to self esteem. The lower of the levels denote to elements such as respect, renown and glory. The higher level is depending on concepts such as confidence, competence, and accomplishment. The lower level in this regard considered as less advanced and more external; and it is also differ from one person to another.

In this regard, Individual with low esteem needs respect from others. “One can seek fame or glory, which again are depending on others. Maslow in this respect also believes that, humans have the need to increase their intelligence and thereby chase knowledge. Cognitive needs are the expression of the natural human need to learn, explore, discover and create to get a better understanding of the world around them. Based on Maslow’s beliefs, one can say that, people need beautiful imagery or something new and aesthetically pleasing to continue up towards self-actualization in motivation process”. Stress

“Stress works in a strange way to motivate, like reverse psychology, when under stress and difficult situations, a person feels pressured. This may trigger feelings of under-achieving, which results in a reverse mindset, to strive to achieve. This is almost sub-conscious. The net amount motivation under stress may motivate a person to work harder in order to “compensate” for his feelings. Psychologists differentiate between this constructive form of stress, called eustress, and the unhelpful state of distress”. (Maslow’s hierarchy of needs – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

For example, a graphic designer may come under stress if he cannot design websites as per the requirements of his boss. This stress may motivate him to learn new programs through which he can design websites in a more efficient manner. In the meanwhile, if he gets another job that gets him out of stress, he will not be motivated anymore to learn new programs. This shows that stress may increase a person’s motivation to learn.
