Hurricane katrina Essay

Hurricane katrina

Hurricane is a tropical cyclone of great intensity - Hurricane katrina Essay introduction. High speed winds spiral in toward a low pressure core of warm, calm air. Winds over 185 mph-298kmph have been measured. The direction of the spiral is clockwise in the southern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere. Hurricanes form over water when there is an existing convergence of air near sea level. The air ascends, losing moisture as precipitation as it does so. If this happens rapidly enough, the upper air is warmed by the water’s latent heat of vaporization. This reduces the surface pressure and thus accelerates air convergence. Since they require large quantities of moist warm air hurricanes rarely penetrate far inland. Hurricanes of the North Pacific are often called typhoons.

Just like what the Hurricane Katrina did and hit New Orleans last August 2005, this hurricane have strength of 140-mile-an-hour (225-kilometer-an-hour) winds and a storm that really destruct the place that it hits. When Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans, the people residing there really needs the help of government official and emergency management. Because they were aware that their location is below sea level and they were surrounded by water forms. Hurricane Katrina only start as a tropical depression which at the west of Bahamas on August 23 and start tracking thru South Florida. At Fort Lauderdale the storm landfall as a Category One. The Hurricane has winds of about 80 miles an hour (129 kilometers an hour). At Florida nine people died during the storm. It made an unanticipated jog southward as it goes to Florida peninsula. Katrina emerges near the southwestern tip of the peninsula and began rapidly strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Katrina persistent to gain strength as it goes after a ragged S-shaped way across the very humid waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricanes gain its strength thru warm water and so when it reaches Alabama, Mobile and New Orleans the Hurricane hits the place horribly.

Some were staranded on their homes and some were evacuated. Difficult in communication also exist, telephones, cellphones and internet access were being damged due to the main base of these communication were damaged. Also major road were destroyed.

New Orleans was very vulnerable to this situation because this place was surrounded by water, like the Missippi river and it was sorroundede by water forms. If was an official of the state I will ensure before that Hurricane comes to my teritory, a sufficient food, medicine and all the basic things needed for human survival are prepared. I will ensure that all the people should evecuate and go to a safe and high place. All of my government staff who are responsible for this situation should be prepared.

Here are some safety measures before and after a Hurricane:

To secure your property make plans. Permanent storm shutters provide the best safety for windows. A second choice is to board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood, it should be cut to fit and ready to install. Tape does not avoid windows from breaking.
Set up straps or additional clips to firmly fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce damage to the roof.
Be sure shrubs and tress around your home are well trimmed.
Clean and blocked rain gutters and downspouts.
If you have a boat determines how and where you will secure it.
Also try or consider building a safe room.
Here are the following measures after a hurricane:

Be sure that the water supply is clean, traveling or walking outside is too dangerous because debris filled streets, disease are common in this kind of situation be prepared and some foods are contaminated so watch out for what you will eat.

In this disaster that passed by our country we learned that being prepared is one of the most important matter in saving lives and cooperation with one another is a big thing.

The frequency between hurricane and global warming is really related to each other. Recent studies had made and found out that global warming really affects the strength of the hurricane. The warm temperature brought by the global warming really increases the intensity of the hurricane by 50 percent over the last three decades, according to research author Kerry Emanuel, a professor of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. He also found out that the intensity of hurricanes and typhoons should increase by 5 percent for every 1ºC (1.8ºF) rise in sea surface temperature.
