I would try to reduce the hardships the recession has brought by introducing an extensive public works programme. This would provide work to many people with different types of skills. This would reawaken many of the ghost estates and run down areas as construction work would flourish employing thousands all over the country. The unemployed would get there confidence back as they would feel that they are valuable all while aiding the improvement of the country.
If I were Taoiseach I would try to get a major transport system build in almost every main town and or city. This again would employ people and create a better environment as people would be less dependant on their cars to get them to work etc. This in my opinion would also reduce the number of deaths on our roads as people would be more inclined to take the bus, LUAS or train on a big night out. I would also make the fair equal for every passenger again encouraging people to use the transport.
I would raise the cost of cigarettes so people would be less inclined to purchase them and therefore reducing the amount of litter on our streets and easing the epidemic of second hand smoke while some smokers may even quit.
I would increase the amount of shelters in cities and towns as many people have been made homeless due to our recessionary times. In these shelters I would employ qualified nurses so people on the streets could be helped. Also we would have to depend on some voluntary support with the soup stations providing the homeless person with nutritious food. A support team may be there to help the person with their issues and even assist them getting back into work. Also a select number of beds would be in each shelter again keeping people off the streets. I would make food establishment’s stop being so wasteful that throw out all kinds of food and make them donate it to charities instead. There are a lot of people still in this country who go to bed hungry every night. Put all that food to good use. This country is by far way too wasteful.
If I were elected Taoiseach, I would like to help hospitals find ways to charge less for rooms, equipment and operations. Many people with hospitalization needs don’t have jobs that can provide money for medical expenses and may have to rely on relatives or generous friends for expenses. I would try to correct this problem by providing money to health facilities to allow them to perform procedures for people at a lower cost.
I would put a limitation on taxation in the country. I think people work extremely hard for their money and when they see their wage get cut in half by harsh taxes imposed by the government they get angry at the government for putting them in this situation. If it were up to me I would pay back our debts slowly so people could have enough money to survive on. I wouldn’t charge different taxes according to the person’s job, I think everyone should get taxed the same at a lower rate.
I would review every minister sitting in the Dáil and make sure they are doing the best for our country and trying to improve the country. I don’t think that people should get paid unless they are working their hardest and putting immense effort into what they are trying to achieve. I would select a great team of advisors who would help me to make decisions for our country so it can be the best it can be.
I would like to achieve a better education system in Ireland where every student’s strengths and talents are highlighted and improved so the pupil can work to the best of their ability. Children are the future of our country and when they aren’t educated properly is there any future for our country? I think students shouldn’t have to study as many subjects for the junior cert as it is very hard to give all of your attention to each subject, I believe each student should choose seven subjects to study for their five or six years in secondary school and work to the best of their ability to study these subjects.
Referendum defined as a submission of an issue of public importance to the direct vote of the electorate. I think the Irish government must begin to stand by the Irish people, work for them, and negotiate for them not for the banks. The banks got us into this mess and it isn’t the responsibility of the citizens to pay of their great debt, it isn’t possible.
However away from my main duties I would love to travel abroad promoting Ireland. As Ireland is an extremely popular tourist destination already I would use my talents and skills to influence countries to help in the promotion of Ireland. This would bring prosperity and most importantly a relationship with the other country which could be very important in times of need as they may help with jobs etc.
I would get involved in worldwide projects and try to help other countries in need as you have to give a little to get a little. Again all of my efforts abroad would hopefully present Ireland as a very welcoming place and even though we may be in a spot of bother we can and we are trying our best to improve the country and what we stand for.
I would try to publish a newspaper that deals especially with what the government are doing every day in order to help our country. I think if this was released the citizens would see what we are working for and how our future is looking. Rather than hearing false and misleading information which makes things sound worse than they are.
I would try to keep up public appearances and let the Irish people know what is going on and how we are planning for the future. I would keep everyone in the loop. I would also encourage the people to give me their suggestions, what they would like to see improved in our economy.
As the next few years are the greatest opportunity to change Ireland and to get out of our economic crisis, I think people should stop talking about change and take action it is the only way to act in our situation. Reformation is needed we need to amend our economy, our government and our country.
