Immigration to the United States Essay
Immigration is what has made America and what it is today. In fact, there would be no America if there were no immigrations, because everyone in the country is an immigrant or is directly descended from one. Even the oldest inhabitants, the Native Americans, emigrated from Asia. From “Immigration: Who Is an American”, mainly discusses about the significance of immigration policies in United States. I believe, immigration is definitely a necessity, however if uncontrolled, to some extent, it can also have devastating affects on the country’s economy.
There could be several obstacles on the nation’s wellbeing due to immigrations. First of all, as the population of immigrants increase, there is a population imbalance problem. Increase in the population density in certain regions might cause excessive use of the resources of one nation that may lead to imbalance of natural resources. Also, the costs incurred in the provision of the resources such as education and health facilities to the immigrants, cause trouble on the nation that hosts immigrants in large numbers.
This is because, the economic growth brought by immigration is avoided by the costs that the nation’s government has to bear in providing the immigrants with the resources. Secondly, jobs available in the country and the nation’s wealth are its property. So, allowing immigration implies the distribution of this property among the non-natives. In other words, immigration implies the distribution of a nation’s wealth to those who do not have a right on it. Accordingly, immigration may harm the nation’s economic growth.
On the other hand, the essay “Does Immigration Increase the Virtues of Hard Work and Fortitude in the United States? ” written by Tamar Jacoby, she contradicts that immigrants do not afraid to do any jobs where they can earn money nevertheless, “The jobs immigrants do are often dirty and dangerous” (331). It is true that exceed immigration may cause ruin affect. However, it can be said that most immigrants, even illegal immigrants tend to work as hard as they could, and increase the country’s productivity.
For example, one day, I had a chance to read about “Maquiladora” or “Maquila” from the Internet news. It is Mexican manufacturing operation in a free trade zone, where corporations rely on cheap labor and lower manufacturing cost provided by nations such as Mexico and Central America. The major problem in Maquila Industry is the exploitation of cheap labor. Most workers are undocumented, although workers are not compensated adequately, and frequently are fired, they could not complain about the problem.
Moreover, the wage of labors is less than minimum wage, though they are taking risk of death by working at unsafe environment. The reason is the labors in Maquila eager to earn money to live their life. If there is a serious problem and the labor is being reported to the police, the labor will be arrested, unable to work, and cannot earn money. Therefore, despite of hazard risk and enormous hardships, immigrants are working as enterprising with the great extent of will to live. In addition, from “Does Immigration Increase the Virtues of Hard Work and Fortitude in the United States? written by Mark Krikorian, he asserts that although immigrants have added disadvantages, such as low levels of skill and education, than people like any others, immigrants are trying to overcome the suffering with the motivation to live life to the full (334). For example, in my college, there are many of both immigrant and migrant friends. When I asked them which university each one of them is planning to transfer. Then, I could realize the different level of motivations among them.
Most of my immigrants and international friends, they are planning to transfer to at least University of California or University of Southern California. On the other hand, my American residential friends do not know what to do and where to go after gradating the college, even not transferring to any universities. Although immigrants or international student like me have to adopt to new environment in US life first, they well subjugate and begin work hard for their high level of goals, due to extreme motivation.
Hence, it is immigrants who tend to live with the great incentives, despite of stressful unfamiliarity to adopt to US life. To conclude, it is undeniable that immigrants are providing more productivity, while it declines economic growth. Though, immigrants work hard as they can with the given job for their future life despite of hardships, whether it is career or studying that some Americans are not tolerant to do. Hence, immigration could be worthwhile, if there is limited immigration. Then, why not welcome them in with open arms.
