The Retribution theory is a theory that holds the criminal accountable for the harm he or she has committed that caused the loss of people, property, or other items that are of value. In most cases the criminal will just serve his or her time without retribution. By holding the criminal accountable for his or her actions of the destruction of property, gives the criminal moral ethics of repaying for the destruction, and some type of monetary value back to the person or people that was affected by the loss and value of their property. Restoration is similar to rehabilitation that attempts to make the criminal whole again.

Like the rehabilitation theory that attempts to make the criminal reformed in his or her way, restoration is tied into the rehabilitation theory for the purpose of ensuring the criminal’s return to society, for the wellbeing of the criminal. Although this is not an actual theory, restoration helps to reform the criminal in an attempt for reuniting with society before they return to the community. The four punishment theories have its positive effects as well as its negative effects, depending on which part the offender is willing to take.

Sanctions are related also to the punishment philosophy because sanctions can be utilized as a form of punishment, as well as a form of rehabilitation method for the offender. Parole and probation are two more kind of forms of sanctions, that are used o lessen the offenders time spent behind jail or prison, or help the offender be released to a halfway house for the purpose of his or her time being nearly completed, and the jails or prisons need the space occupied by the near release offender.

Parole can also be used in two ways. Parole can be used as a form of punishment for the offender that has completed his or her time, and can also be used as rehabilitation for the offender has completed all the time opposed on him or her, and is now ready to re-enter society in the community as a productive citizen, and seek employment in the process.
