Interview of a Social Service Agency BSHS/442 Introduction Advocates play an important role in the course of empowering individuals who require support to exercise his or her rights, and advocates create awareness in the public concerning the problems. An advocate takes on the role to speak and stand for an individual or group in need. The advocate becomes the voice of the disadvantaged or discriminated population to stop the oppression. Advocates offer assistance and information concerning the person’s rights, listens, ask questions, and much more.
The advocate is the person who is there only for the disadvantaged and discriminated population to help explore alternatives on how to achieve, maintain, and protect their interest. The following will discuss the interview of Mr. Rosen an advocate for elders and entail further information on the use of advocacy and mediation within a social services agency. Interview I interviewed a county worker with in-home supportive services. Mr. Rosen has been an advocate for years because his mother was mistreated in a home for the disabled.
The support of the elderly provided by In-home supportive sources has allowed Mr. Rosen to keep his mother in the home and know that when he is gone at work she is cared for. As an advocate for the agency Mr. Rosen educates the public about knowing the signs of abuse the elderly face and speaking out against abuse. Mr. Rosen is an advocate for those who have no voice by continuously improving the standards of care givers and their responsibilities reporting a crime. Mr. Rosen explains that many of the elderly are neglected, can be taken advantage of, and mistreated by family or relatives.
Caregivers have the knowhow and experience to detect abuse and put a stop to the cruelty. Mr. Rosen is an advocate but also plays an important role with the in-home supportive service agency by providing personal stories of inspiration and important facts about ensuring elder abuse stops and is prevented. In-home supportive service takes care of the needs of the elderly who need help because of an illness, disability, or incapability to care for them. In-home supportive service provides important resources to families by ensuring medical services are given, daily needs
are meet, and improvement of the quality of life is met. Mr. Rosen first came to hear about these services after he took his mother out of an elderly home where some of the nurse did not properly do their job failing to provide normal hygiene, medication, and malnutrition. The most rewarding things Mr. Rosen stated about his job are he, “knows that the elderly will be taken care of and not be mistreated by those looking to take advantage of their disability”. He stated that knowing he is making a difference and connecting with families in need keeps him involved in his job.
The ability to inspire others to make a difference comes from the motivation of another hard work making the job that much easier. Mr. Rosen stated that he would change the amount of time taken to check in with those receiving care however, because of the increase in need by the elderly population there is only yearly checkups unless there is a change in address, needs, or providers. The needs of each client are different and his values promote high standards of services, care, and integrity on the job. Mr.
Rosen believes that his upbringing has improved his ability to carry out his job because he is able to provide dependability, quality work, and experience of a true leader on and off the job. Further Investigation with Advocacy and Mediation Mediation for disputing parties or advocacy for human rights has become essential elements in the human service field. Mediators and advocates share some similarities and dissimilarity; however, the duty both professional have in common is to progress the wellbeing of his or her client.
Mediators are a neutral third party and assist disputing parties to negotiate a solution to their conflict. The responsibility of a mediator is to guide the arguing parties to cope with the conflict constructively. The decision-making authority stays among the disagreeing parties. Advocates, on the other hand, can be biased to one party or group. Advocates become the voice for the oppressed population, and initiate awareness on a national and international level to change laws and current condition to improve their needs.
An advocate may also assist an individual throughout a negotiation or trial. The previous interview with a professional in the social service field illustrated how mediation and advocacy’s importance. A Social Services Lobbyist is a person advocating for a special interest group, who tries to influence the beginning of, voting on legislation, or help in the decisions of government administrators. They attend government meetings to advocate to help the government create the funds needed to accommodate the client in the best outcome possible.
Incorporation of advocacy and mediation in human services advances conflict resolution through advocacy and mediation. Professionals in the human service field acknowledge the advantages of alternative conflict resolution applied in mediation promoting shared change. A mediator is a neutral third party who assists to resolve a disagreement or conflict by exploring crucial issues, resolve misunderstandings, look at solutions, and discuss a jointly favorable outcome. Mediators set up guiding principles throughout the mediation process.
In addition, mediators help better the communication among disagreeing parties, support participants to articulate difficult topics in a secure environment, encourages and empowers thoughts with proposals from all parties, and supports joint decision-making between disputing parties. Mediators do not show preferential treatment toward a party. Advocates are the voice of diverse oppressed communities. Advocacy establishes awareness with the public to provide fair dealings and amend laws to improve present condition. The goals of advocates are to change specific standpoints of the community and to obtain fairness for one and all.
Advocacy may have an effect on individuals and governmental. Advocates can represent the interest and requirements of neglected groups through conferences, hearings, media, and telephone. Activists contest current policies in place and promote improved systems and policy enhancement. In addition, advocates help the resolution of disagreements and conflicts. Advocates and mediators offer professional support on behalf of the disagreeing parties. The professions of advocate and mediator must possess the knowledge regarding legal aspects that can arise; however, advocates and mediators do not make any legal decision.
The advocate and mediator will refer his or her client to trained personnel who can provide legal advice. Both professionals are accountable to advance the wellbeing of his or her clients. Conclusion Advocates play an important role in assisting people who require support to his or her rights. Advocates create awareness in the public concerning issues that need attention.
