Othello’s weak understanding of his own character, as a soldier and man of color in a world, and his lack of faith in the relationship that he and Desdemona ends up leading to his downfall. “I will wear my heart upon my sleeve for daws to peck at” (Shakespeare, 2005). There are quite a few themes that can relate to this play however, the main theme is :The incompatibility of military heroism and love; the danger of isolation(Sparknotes,2012). The character relates to this theme because he possesses his heroism by being in the military and his love for Desdemona.

Other themes that can be taken from “Othello” are race, gender, sex, black and white, marriage, manipulation, welfare, hate and identity. Othello’s character was like a real person because “In the Venice of that time [Othello] was in practically the same position as a colored man in America today. He was a general, and while he could be valuable as a fighter he was tolerated, just as a Negro who could save New York from a disaster would become a great man overnight.

So soon, however, as Othello wanted a white woman, Desdemona, everything was changed, just as New York would be indignant if their colored man married a white woman. ”(Robenson,1930). Othello’s character was not like a real person because Othello was perceived as like a hero of the ancient world he seems born to do great deeds and human are always making mistakes which makes us not perfect. The theme jealously in Othello is one of the major themes that not only mention but also seen within the play. “I confess, it is my ature’s plague , To spy into abuses, and oft my jealousy ,Shapes faults that are not”(Hylton) This line shows jealously at its best because Iago not only claims that he is jealous but he also shows it within the play as well.

Another quote that was also said were “O, beware, my lord, of jealousy; It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock, The meat it feeds on; that cuckold lives in bliss, Who, certain of his fate, loves not his wronger; But, O, what damned minutes tells he o’er, Who dotes, yet doubts, suspects, yet strongly loves! (Hylton). Loyalty in Othello is another major theme because in Othello’s play, it revealed that one’s loyalty might cause one’s betrayal. At the beginning of the play, Iago stated, “Were I the moor, I would not be Iago. In following him, i follow but myself. ” This quote shows that Iago is a crafty person. His loyalty assists him to betray Othello, and lead to Othello’s tragedy. Desdemona is a loyal wife and her loyalty towards Othello is invisible to Othello.

Also, Othello is loyal to Desdemona and he expects the same return from Desdemona being that, the subject of loyalty plays a significant part in the play. The black and white theme also mention throughout the play. The opening of the last act when Othello is looking at Desdemona he is saying “It is the cause, it is the cause, my soul, let me not name it to you, you chaste stars! It is the cause. “Yet I’ll not shed her blood; nor scar that whiter skin of hers than snow, and smooth as monumental alabaster” (Weller).
