Mary Shelley “Frankenstein” Essay
The Creature in Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus” needs a companionship as every ordinary human. Every man needs a woman, who will able to share moments of happiness and sadness, a woman who will be able to share thoughts and of course a woman who will be able to love a man. In this case the Creature needs a bride. But the problem is that the Creature from the “Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus” is not a human.
So can human rights and needs be applied to the Creature and can the Creature have a bride? No.
The answer is negative because the Creature is not a human. Victor Frankenstein have done a mistake by giving a life to the Creature and creating a bride for the Creature is can be considered as making another additional mistake to the previous one. Creator’s responsibility surrounding the Creature is not a reason to create a bride for him, because Victor Frankenstein also has responsibilities in front of other people who would not like the idea of creating another monster and Victor Frankenstein also has responsibilities in front of science.
The Creature in Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus” cannot have a bride because he is not human though the Creature has some features of the human being. The Creature cannot be called as a human because of some several reasons. First thing is a physical appearance of the Creature. The Creature will never be accepted as a human by other humans because of the physical appearance. The Creature has enormous height and according to Mary Shelley he can be described as a hideous creature.
“Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turned away from me in disgust? (Mary Shelley, “Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus”, page 88) This example demonstrates the Creature’s attitude to his own physical look and the Creature himself finds his look hideous so any person even own creator does not accept him as a human being. The Creature in Marry Shelley’s “Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus” is not a human because it came to the world in unnatural and some sort of disgust way. Also the Creature did not have a normal human way of developing. “No father had watched my infant days; no mother had blessed me with smiles and caresses.
What was I? ” (Mary Shelley, “Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus”, page 88) This example demonstrates that the Creature did not have a normal human life, because the Creature is not a human, the Creature is a monster. He is a monster not only because he looks like one, but also he acts like one. He is monster because people treat him like one and the most important that the Creature considers himself as a monster. Victor Frankenstein should not create a bride for the Creature because it would be repeating the same mistake.
Giving a life to the Creature was a mistake. “…Hateful day when I received life…” (Mary Shelley, “Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus”, page 88) The Creature many times has said that his creation was a mistake. His unnatural birth has brought nothing positive, only lots of disappointments. His creator admitted that should have not created a life in this irresponsible way. The Creature just exists, he does not live and the Creature is not happy about it. Other people feel nothing to the Creature but fear. So nobody is happy of the Creature’s existence.
The Creature brings nothing but problems. The biggest problem is the Creature himself. The problem should be solved. So by creating a bride Victor Frankenstein does not solve problem but doubles it. Meanwhile there is only one reason why Victor Frankenstein should create a bride. This reason is responsibility of the creator surrounding the Creature. Victor Frankenstein by giving a life to the Creature probably did understand that he becomes some sort of father and every parent has responsibility in front of their child.
In this case Victor Frankenstein has responsibilities surrounding the Creature. As any parent Victor Frankenstein would wish his creation be happy and would like to the Creature have a companionship. At the same time the doctor should not forget his responsibilities surrounding other people. Victor Frankenstein knows that society will not like the fact of existence of the Creature and according to that it is not hard to understand that creation a bride for the Creature will not be welcomed either.
Victor Frankenstein also has responsibilities surrounding science. It is obvious that by creating a bride for the Creature, doctor gives a chance to have children. By giving that chance Victor Frankenstein also gives a chance of creating a new race. By giving that chance doctor gives a chance of mutilating the genes. Mutilating the genes is not acceptable by science because it may have very dangerous consequences and that is another reason why Victor Frankenstein should not create a bride for the Creature.
