Meaning of Life Connection to Macbeth Essay

The most thought-provoking quotation from Shakespeare’s Macbeth could arguably be “Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day to the last syllable of recorded time, and all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death - Meaning of Life Connection to Macbeth Essay introduction. Out, out, brief candle! Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player, that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” (V.v.21-30). It is perhaps one of the most chilling and disturbing quotations; possibly because it, for some, is an echo of our own thoughts.

Possibly, Macbeth could have been saying “Day by day, time passes, stretching on into eternity. We all have a show that is our life; and in the grand scheme of things it lasts but an hour. All we are is actors. A shadow. We are not real. We spend our lives upon a ‘stage’ and pretend to be who we are. We emote, we yell and scream. Yet once our time is done, we die. That is all. It’s about as meaningless as a play; a lot of useless noise. Pointless.” This may be the one time people can relate to Macbeth the most. He believes that life is pointless. We are not going to make a mark or do anything useful to this world, and we leave behind nothing. There is no point, and to believe you are important in this world is just foolish.

Many people would agree with Macbeth; life is meaningless. Anyone who has the audacity to believe otherwise is simply naive, right? Really, is there any point to living? We live, we die. Once we die, a new person starts living. Nobody will look back in fifty years and remember “Shawn, that nice guy who owned a bakery and helped Karen move that one time.” We are insignificant. Small. Pointless.

Does whether or not we leave a mark impact the way we live? Yes. If my life means nothing, I don’t really feel bad about the fact that I spend all my weekends playing Super Mario on my Super Nintendo and haven’t changed my shirt in a week. It doesn’t matter. When I die, not a soul will remember a thing like that. I could skydive, and live my life the way I want to, just simply because it does not matter.

The way we live our lives should not change just because some may believe it does not matter. Who knows, perhaps you do change the world in a way. I believe that people who are remembered in history are remembered because they wanted to be remembered, so they did something memorable. Nobody would remember Joan of Arc if she had just sat around her house every single day. No. She is remembered because she lived her life in a way that changed the world. She lived her life like it mattered. For others, life is incredibly meaningful. The way you live your life is your choice, but if you choose to live it positively, then you will truly be remembered, and your life will be meaningful. The ‘legacy’ you leave behind could simply be a memory in the heart of a loved one, or a stack of old photographs of you being yourself.

A legacy doesn’t have to be something life-changing, nor does it have to be known by the entire world. Sometimes, the things you leave behind to those special few who have changed your life is a legacy you leave and it may change their life. I definitely believe life is meaningful. Maybe it’s the fact that I believe you only have one life to live; and after that- well, who knows. All I know is that if you do something with your life that, as you die and your life flashes before your eyes, makes you think ‘hey, it was a good run’ then you have lived a meaningful life. Perhaps I cannot change the world, and maybe not a single person I know can single-handedly change the world, but together, if we all live our lives like we truly can do something, that life is worth living, maybe we can make a change and leave a “legacy.” That legacy would be a better world for our children and grandchildren to live in. Perhaps a world at peace. Maybe it’s a world without disease. Every person can contribute to making a change and leaving the world in a better condition than when we came into it. Isn’t that the greatest legacy of all?
