I work on a hospital ward dedicated into looking after the elderly. Confidentiality is a fundamental part of the nursing profession practice that protects human rights (NMC 2008). A mentor is a guide who can help the mentee to find the right direction and who can help them to develop solutions to career issues. Mentors rely upon having had similar experiences to gain an empathy with the mentee and an understanding of their issues. Mentoring provides the mentee with an opportunity to think about career options and progress. (MentorSET 2008).

The NMC (2008) say a NMC mentor is a registrant who, following successful completion of an NMC approved mentor preparation programme – or comparable preparation that has been accredited by an AEI as meeting the NMC mentor requirements – has achieved the knowledge, skills and competence required to meet the defined outcomes. The role of the mentor is important. They have the responsibility and final say weather student has achieved the final required standards of proficiency for safe and effective practice for entry on to the Nursing and midwifery council, (Nursing and Midwifery Council ,2012).
Mentoring began appearing in the nursing literature as early as 1977 when Vance systematically defined the mentor concept for the nursing profession. In the 1980s a nurse consultant in leadership and organisational development interviewed 150 people of whom 50 were nurses, and found that for all those studied; the essential components of “an important major mentor relationship” are attraction, action and affect which correspond to mentoring roles as inspirer, investor and supporter.
Informal mentoring began to appear in the UK in the 1980s but attempts to grapple with defining the concepts and roles did not appear until the 1990s when there was a burgeoning of nursing publications about the subject. The idea of mentoring was attractive to health professionals because of a focus on the learner’s needs,( New Zealand College of Midwives 2013) To be a sign-off practice teacher you must successfully complete an approved programme and then be supervised, by an existing sign-off practice teacher, on at least one occasion in the signing off proficiency of a SCPHN student who is at the end of their final placement.
Once completed you can be annotated as a practice teacher on the local register.
