An inquisitive individual puts a question to a Realized Soul, in a congregation. “Revered Master, Bertrand Russell says that mental fear creates God. Christianity is committed to belief in God, and He is the Ruler of everything that exists. What have you to say?” Bertrand Russell is right, but I am a not wrong,” said the Realized Soul, “He is speaking from his mental level, I am trying to convey through speech what I have experienced,” said the Realized Soul. The problem with most of the thinkers, philosophers, intellectuals and scientists is that they speak from the level of their own progression. They stop at the mind barrier, and clash by airing different viewpoints. Even after reading thousands of religious books or scriptures, one can not experience the Reality. Only when one transcends the mind barrier, Reality dawns! One experiences bliss and in that state, all differences of opinions, conflicts cease! All contradictions end, doubts perish. All false notions which cloud one’s mind are removed .The futility of mere philosophical wrangling is appreciated. God is the source of everything. To prove this point, an analogy is given of ornaments which have no reality apart from gold of which they are made.
Understanding the philosophy of life, experiencing the divinity…
A renowned surgeon once asked the Realized Soul. “I am a surgeon. In the discharge of my duties towards my patients, I have performed thousands of operations. I have dissected each and every part of the human body. I have not seen your God anywhere within the body.” Well,” said the Realized Soul. “And you must have seen human emotions like love, frustration and fear?” “Certainly not, how one can see them? They are just emotions!” The Realized Soul had by now clinched the issue by this question. He said, “These are mind-level emotions and yet you are unable to see them. You can see God, experience the Divine, by transcending the mind only. When the domain of the mind comes to an end, divinity can be experienced!” Let me now throw some light on the two con tending forces and philosophies of the Western World, Christianity and Marxism. Stevenson writes, “Christianity is of course committed to belief in God, a personal being, who is omnipotent, omniscient, and perfectly good, the Creator, Ruler, and Judge of everything that exists.”(Stevenson, 1998, p.6.).The view of Marx is diametrically opposite. “Marx condemned religion as “the opium of the people,” an illusory system of belief that distracts them from their real social problems. He holds that the universe exists without anybody behind or beyond it and is fundamentally material in nature.”(Stevenson, 1998, p.6)
Jesus could not have been aware that he was exercising powers when he cured people of their diseases—meaning that it was not an act of volition, a conscious exercise of power on the part of Lord Jesus, but that He was merely the channel of the divine. His all actions are divine and therefore faultless. Whatever he said does becomes truth-related. So, what is important for his followers is not only to have the cross on the neck but Christ in the heart. One can not fulfill one’s duty simply by uttering God’s name, by chanting the hymns or by counting the beads. What is essential is to grasp and assimilate His revelations and make them a part of one’s being. Whatever one is, and whatever one may do, one’s prime concern should be to exemplify and demonstrate the validity of His words of fathomless wisdom. Many, and Marx was one of them, intoxicated by their intellectual achievements, disregard the reality of the Cosmic Supreme. One can hear them claiming that if God is there then how is that cosmonauts who went far into the space could not find Him. However, the fact is, God cannot be searched in the world outside. He can be realized in the innermost chambers of our hearts .God is not sitting in the sky granting rewards and punishments. Spirituality being the root of the whole creation, the science of spirituality is the fountainhead of all the sciences. The spiritual science is the science of the Soul, the Pure Consciousness, and the common heritage of the entire world. Since the Pure Consciousness is all-pervading and is also the propelling force behind the whole of the existence, the spiritual science is stated to be the science of all the sciences. Marx vehemently disagrees. “Marxism says the opposite—that there can be no real improvement in individual lives until there has been a radical change in the society. The socio-economic system of capitalism must be replaced by Communism. This revolutionary change is said to be inevitable, because of laws of historical development; what individuals should do is to join the progressive movement and help shorten the birth pangs of the new age.”( Stevenson, 1998, p.7)
Origin of Life:
The literature available on religion, theology and spirituality is incomparable –quantity-wise and quality wise. Stevenson has churned that well, given his original ideas as he has the foresight and understanding to remove the non-essentials from it He follows a system of thought and provides clarity in views and conclusions. He is the Reader in Logic and Metaphysics, University of St. Andrews, Scotland. David L. Haberman, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, Indiana University. Both are, therefore, eminently suited to write on the subject. The theories of creation elucidated by various thinkers have an intrinsic capacity in them, not only to lull the suffocating restlessness of the questioning intellect, but they open up many new vistas of original thought, which, left to themselves, they would never have come upon to explore.
ln reality, Marx is perhaps aware of the internal working system of the human beings, and he knocks at the portals of spirituality, without actually being aware of where he is trying to enter when he writes, “…Such is the goal of history, although it should be expected immediately after the revolution, a transitional stage will be needed before the higher phase of Communist society can come into being.”(Stevenson, 1998, p.7) Now, what is this higher phase? He is referring to the human evolution, the pairs of opposites, the negative and the positive qualities etc.
The origin of life is one of the great mysteries in the Universe. The investigating scientists are as confused as a child in the kindergarten about the alphabets, on the first day of admission in the school. They have chosen different areas for their research, like life on our own planet, fossil life, moons in our solar system etc. However, experiment here have established with reasonable certainty that life began 3.5 billion years ago as rocks of that age with fossils have been found in Africa and Australia. .As per our understanding, life on Earth means it must have water. What are the different theories on the origin of life? These theories, rather add to the confusion, instead of solving it. “Even if we have a real living configuration, we cannot recreate life. Dead or frozen bodies cannot be brought back to life after an extended lifeless time. We need to accept the explanation that God created the universe and all life and direct our beliefs and actions to be consistent with the acknowledgment of the Creator and Jesus’ revelation that He is the way, the truth, and the life.” (Theories…)
The Theory of Spontaneous Generation, as propounded by Louis Pasteur “was disproved as the Origin of Life in 1859. Ironically, it was this same year that Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species was published. From this work arose the modern evolutionary movement, which is now thought to have occurred in six phases: (1) Cosmic Evolution (the origin of space, time, matter and energy from nothing); (2) Chemical Evolution (the development of the higher elements from hydrogen); (3) Stellar and Planetary Evolution (the origin of stars and planets); (4) Organic Evolution (the origin of organic life from a rock); (5) Macro Evolution (the origin of major kinds); and (6) Micro Evolution (the variation within the kinds). Only the sixth phase has been observed and documented. The first five are merely assumed.”(Theories….)
Cosmic Evolution, known as the Big Bang Theory, is not an acceptable theory. It has many loose ends and unexplainable areas. It doesn’t stand the scientific scrutiny. It is mum on the even distribution of original matter. Its failure to explain the reality of retrograde motion without violating the Law of Conservation of Angular Momentum is the other objection. And what was the bang about? What exploded? How explosion created the perfect order, whereas every explosion small or big creates only disorder and destruction? Big Bang also fails to explain two out of the three Laws of Thermodynamics.
Origin and Nature of humankind:
Socrates postulated that only the examined life was worth living. This is comparable to what is stated by the Realized Souls of the orient (say Hinduism) that constant Self-Enquiry is the essence and goal of life. Human beings need to use reason as the servant, not as the master. One needs to be open-minded and must take into consideration the changing situations and the demands of the time. Today even a child instinctively questions every ethical rule and moral injunction. Obedience to these laws becomes implicit the moment we are able to make our generation see the rationale behind such moral insistence. I think truth—means my intellect is soaked with the studies of sacred texts which explain to me the Absolute Truth(God) and ideal way of true living. Thus, I patiently educate my intellect on the lines of the sacred text-books and come to a certain intellectual culture which is dependable and pleasing to me and to others. All human beings have to face three types of obstacles that might profoundly affect evolving of their nature. They are God-sent, like lightening, thunder, Phenomenal like fire, floods, landslides and purely subjective like, lack of faith, insincerity etc. In realizing the God-experience within oneself, the ordinary world of experience in which one is living is no more available for such an individual. One lives in one’s own Infinite experience of Bliss, Absolute in oneself, desiring nothing, wanting nothing, expecting nothing, beyond all finite imperfections and miseries, a master of circumstances.
Basically, One’s true Self or Consciousness gets projected in four major states. They are Conscious State, Subconscious State, Unconscious State and Super conscious State. The scientist Andrew Newberg, in his book, “Why God won’t Go Away?” wrote about his experiment, when he took brain scans of Tibetan Buddhists in meditation as they sat immersed in contemplation. First Newberg gave them the time to immerse in a deep meditative trance, and then he injected them with a radioactive dye. The patterns of the dye’s residues in the brain were later converted into images. It was discovered that certain areas of the brain were altered during deep meditation. Meditation stimulates the activation of the frontal lobe, the deactivation of the parietal lobe, and there is an alteration in the temporal lobe. All this finally leads to experiencing Divinity.
Diagnosis of what is wrong with humankind and what we need to do to make it right.
One must feel in one’s soul the anguish of the terror-stricken world the demands of a radical change in our behavior. Man is a mixture of elements, for one can easily visualize so much of generosity in one yet so much of wretchedness, so much of magnanimity yet so much of stinginess, so much of greatness and yet so much of meanness. Once someone asked Leo Tolstoy, “Have you seen the devil?” Tolstoy replied, “No, I haven’t.” He remarked, “Please look into the mirror and you will find one.” In other words, each one of us has diabolic qualities as well as the divine ones. One needs to make efforts to strengthen one’s divine qualities and weaken the devilish ones, as this is the only way to contribute to peace. The pages of human history daubed in bloodshed related to religious violence, territorial fights etc. ask the crying question. How to make this Planet Earth heaven like? The answer is simple and direct. Eyes full of understanding, hearts full of love and the life that refuses conflicts—enough, these alone are enough! What is practiced is important, not what is preached. That which is not practical can not be spiritual either. To cross the mind-barrier means to change the thought process. When the thoughts process of an individual is changed, the action process is also changed. When the thoughts are changed, the mind is changed; when the mind is changed, the man is changed; when the man is changed, the society is changed; when the society is changed the Nation is changed; such changed Nations make the dream of world peace, an attainable reality. Marx is perhaps aware of this internal working system of the human beings, and he knocks at the portals of spirituality, without actually being aware of what is he trying to open, when he writes, “…Such is the goal of history, although it should be expected immediately after the revolution, a transitional stage will be needed before the higher phase of Communist society can come into being.”(Stevenson, 1998, p.7) Now, what is this higher phase? It is the same as the human evolution, the pairs of opposites, the negative and the positive qualities etc.
In the processes of industrialization, urbanization, internet revolution and globalization, the human communities have lost sight of common values and also spiritual values informing a cohesive whole and, as a result, all sorts of social contradictions and conflicts manifest themselves. A sense of collectivity is disappearing, ethical norms are tattered; and such social ills as environmental decay, poverty, racial and social discrimination, and violence, which threaten co-prosperity if humanity, are all the more prevalent. Instead of treating each other like enemies, the members of world community have to learn to conceive of the global society as a single family; a society which is spiritually beautiful, materially affluent, and humanly rewarding. Myopic and narrow-sighted exclusionary parochialism, hegemonic state-nationalism, religious fundamentalism, collective egoism, manipulation of public opinion by the strength f number; all of these old anachronistic habits certainly are obstacle to a brighter future for global human society.
Believing in God and being engaged in spiritual practices does not mean that it is the weak surrender of the human will power. It is surrender no doubt, but the dynamic surrender. It is not renunciation of action; but participation in action. It is not a state of desire less ness. . It is not to possess the motivated desires. One must try to attain that stage which is declared by Jesus Christ: “A pure eye lets sunshine into your soul.”(Luke 11:34) During his Age, Christ blessed the mankind with this ‘Eye’ (Divine Light.). It implies that all the great messengers of Truth, have always revealed the same Eternal Path, the same profound Knowledge to mankind from time to time. For, the Supreme Knowledge is one and it is Immutable. It is Eternal. Understanding this alone will bring peace to humankind. This is my philosophy of life.
