The task of the project is to improve the Novenco fire fighting system by designing a developed version without the problem of clogging - Noveco Fire Fighting Systems introduction. There have been made two alternative systems which both can eliminate the problem. To choose between the two alternatives I have made a preliminary plan for both cases. In my opinion the two new alternatives are improvements of the original design based on a system error and therefore only needs to be developed. The biggest part of the project is the technical. Therefore I have chosen to have both a mechanical and manufacturing engineer. The mechanical engineers job is to make the idea of the new setup into a possible product.
He has to come up with a solution to how every component shall work and how the whole system will work. The manufacturing engineer’s job is to design the whole product, optimize the efficiency of the system and possible also think of the environment. The last persons could possibly be from Global management and manufacturing and an economist. Their job would be to lower the cost of the products, spread our product to different markets in other countries and make supply chains. Project team for alternative 2 The second alternative is quite different. In this solution to the problem the system has got a new nozzle component.
The nozzle is divided into two parts and allows a decoupling of the nozzle head. Then the ship’s crew can clean the nozzle head themselves. The first I would include in my project would be a user. Users often play an important role in innovation because they know how the system is right now and how it could be improved. There is a big difference between knowing the system because you have made it and knowing the system because you have used it in your daily life. Secondly I would as in the first alternative hire people from the technology department. Without the technicians it would not be possible to create the new system.
Technicians who can be a part of the product development phase and also set the standards of how the final product should work. In this case I think it would be important to have someone from Service and parts. The workers have to do the cleaning of the nozzles themselves and therefore needs a good service and parts department. The last person in the team would be a person who could have the total overview of the financials. This means the total crew of alternative two consist of external expertise from the users, technical support from mechanical engineer and a manufacturing ngineer. They nearly have the same purposes as in the first alternative just with the difference of a different system. Another member of the project team is from service and parts. His expertise would be mounting of the system, solving possible errors of the new system and guidance in using the system in the best way. The last member would be an economist. The stage gate model A stage gate system is a project management tool with the goal of quality. The stage gate system focuses on eliminating errors and improving business processes.
It gives a more systematic approach to how a firm should develop and launch new products. The stage gate model is seen above consisting of 5 stages and 5 gates. The five stages are designed to gather the needed information to move the project to the next decision point. The gates work as a go further or kill points. Main gates and stages for alternative 1 Gate In this gate the potential of the project is evaluated. The team also has to make a list of must meet criteria’s. This is a list of objectives the new FF system has to fulfil to be successful. When this is done the new team can begin with the first stage. Detailed investigation In this stage the new team has to determine the technical objectives of the project.
This includes a research of the potential of the new system and finding user needs for the new Novenco FF. The next thing is to make a plan of the project. How long will it take before it is done, what will it cost and what are the routes to have it done. Additionally the team has to make a delineation of the project and look at their competitors. This stage can possible be done by the supplier and the person from Global management and manufacturing. Gate In this gate the economist has to evaluate financial commitment regarding the development. This includes research concerning the possibility of making the new system in the current factory.
The team also has to evaluate all the activities made until now. Everything has to be evaluated by the full team before continuing to the development stage. Development In this stage the mechanical engineer and the manufacturing engineer has a major influence. The system of the new alternative has to be constructed and test has to be made ensuring the new system meets all requirements. In the end of this stage the engineers have to have made a prototype of the automatically flushing system. The rest of the team have to make operation activities. This includes feedback of the customers and market launch plans.
Gate In this gate the GMM engineer has to make a research of the continuing attractiveness of the new Fire fighting system. The economist has to make an updated financial plan in the light of the new prototype and the engineers have to make review of their work in the development stage. Testing In the testing stage the economist, supplier and the GMM validate the viability of the project. This includes a financial account of the manufacturing process, checking the attractiveness of their new system, field trials of the product, get new customers. Gate This is the final gate before market launch.
The team has to evaluate all results from the testing stage to get a total overview of the new system and decide if it is profitable to launch it. Launch This is the final stage in the stage gate process. It is here the team launches their final product. The team implement their marketing and production plan to give the new fire fighting system the best start on the market as possible. At some point the project must be terminated due to the new system has become a regular part of the fire fighting system. Everything has to be summed up before developing the project, so it the project will fulfil every all requirements. This is a task for the entire team. Development This stage makes the idea of the product into reality. It is in this phase the two engineers manufacture the divided nozzle head. All requirements has to be fulfilled, this is where the person from service and parts also has a major influence.
His job is among other things to have the total overview of the system and its function. When the prototype of the new nozzle head has been made, a lot of tests have to be made to secure the quality and standards of the final product.
