I asked family and friends to answer the response question, “Name one Great (important, significant, successful) person and tell why they are great. ” Attached are the responses my family and friends gave to that question. In analyzing the responses I learned that there are a lot of people that have significantly contributed to the world today. When I asked people this question, they had to think about it for a few minutes and decide who they wanted to use as their response. It seems as though not one person came instantly to anyone’s mind.
They had several people in mind and needed to analyze who had the greatest impact or the most important impact to them. The contributions of the people my family and friends listed are wide spread. They come from technology, horse racing, Christianity, family relationships and leadership. My Daughter, who is eleven, chose Penny Chenery. She is the owner of the fastest thoroughbred horse race of all times, Big Red. I asked her why she thought Penny was a successful person and she responded because of her contributions to horse racing and because she was a women that was successful in a time when women were supposed to be house wives.
Even though it took a motion picture movie for my Daughter to know Penny Chenery and her life as a successful woman, I am proud of her for recognizing and remembering her contributions to horse racing. Another response I found interesting was that of my Husband’s. He responded that Japanese Emperor Hirohito and Germany’s Adolf Hitler were great people. He chose them because they pulled the United States into WWII, which helped the United States recover from the depression. He believes this is what saved the American Economy at that time.
I found this interesting because most people have a negative connotation associated with Adolf Hitler. I myself would not have put him on my top ten list of great people. This shows that everyone sees success and contributions differently. I also asked this question to my five year old niece. Her response was her Meme Jenn. She said that her Meme Jenn is a great person because when kids aren’t at school and their Mommy and Daddy are at work, Meme Jenn takes care of the kids.
I always like to get a childs perspective on response questions because they will give you insight that you would never think of. My niece is the only one that responded with a family or friend being a great person. All the rest of my responses were famous or well-known individuals. My niece reminded me that we are surrounded by great people everywhere and that success doesn’t have to mean making millions, it can mean being a babysitter to young children. A playmate when Mommy and Daddy have to work. Meme Jenn is a hero to my niece and that makes her a great person!
Overall, looking at the ten responses I received in order for a person to be named great they needed to have perseverance, determination and drive. Alexander Fleming is a good example of a person with perseverance. To discover a working medicine, such as penicillin, you have to experiment over and over for years. Alexander Fleming grew bacteria looking for the “wonder drug” and discovered a strong antibiotic instead. Robert Herjavec is an example of determination. He grew up the son of an immigrant and was determined to be successful and help is family.
He began building technology companies from the ground up and selling those to larger companies, making millions. His grew up with determination and still has it today. I consider him to be a very successful and innovative business man. Many of the people listed by my family and friends show the drive necessary to be successful. Steve Jobs for example. He started Pixar in the 1979, after being fired from Apple. When Pixar was bought by Disney it made Steve jobs the largest shareholder in Disney. As you know Steve Jobs went back to Apple and was instrumental in developing the iphone.
He gave us something we didn’t know we needed, but now we can’t live without it. Steve Jobs is a great example of having the drive to be a successful person. Every person will think of success is a different way. Success may be developing the airplane, or spreading Christianity, or ending slavery, or being a babysitter to young children. I believe as long as a person has perseverance, determination and a drive to be successful, they will be able to contribute positively to the world and leave an everlasting impression on the generations to come.
