Amanda Goldstein 11/17/11 Persuasive Essay ELA Since when are kids under the age of 16 forced to be inside? People should not have to be forced to be inside their houses by 7 o’clock P. M.! I think it should be up to your parents to give you a curfew or not. Having a curfew isn’t fun. Children from ages 16 and under should not have a curfew.
For example, on November 2, 2007 a child who was concerned for his constitutional rights, has anonymously filed suit against the city of Rochester to have the curfew law over turned. This is what happens when stuff isn’t fair. Another reason that kids shouldn’t have a curfew is that we are pretty much going against an amendment. The 14th Amendment clearly reads: “All persons born or naturalized in the U. S. and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state where in they reside.

No state shall make or enforce any law, which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens in the United States. Nor shall any state deprive a person of life liberty of the pursuit of happiness. Nor deny to any person with in it jurisdiction equal protection of the laws. ” The 14th Amendment clearly defines anyone born in the United States a citizen. Meaning that being under the age of 18 doesn’t not car individuals rights as written in the constitution. Curfew laws violate the 14th Amendment by not granting equal protection of all laws.
The 14th Amendment was originally written in 1866 so that states could not pass laws that affect some citizens and not others. Finally, if you honestly think teens need a curfew because they are doing a lot of crime at night well, you’re wrong. According to the California Department of Justice 83% of murdered children, 50% of murdered teenagers, and 85% of murdered adults are all caused by adults, over the age of 20. To be honest…I think that people with a previous record should have a curfew so we know where they are and we can feel a little bit more safe.
So, I hope you get the point. Curfew laws are reminiscent of these dark days in our country, days that are filled with hate and in justice. Prohibiting the rights of minors is taking a giant step backwards in equality and liberty and at the time doing little to nothing in the fight against crime. If you’re as fed up with curfews as I am, speak up! We will be heard. Imagine what the world would be like…would it be any different from today? Or completely different…
