Introduction

On September 7th and 14th of 2000 my lab spouses and I conducted the polystyrene bead casting undertaking - Polystyrene Bead Molding Research Paper IntroductionOn Essay introduction. My lab spouses are Josh Dick, Mike Ward, and Keith Matlock, and we conducted the process in room W126 of the Kansas Technology Center. We were to try to do polystyrene bead casts utilizing two different methods. In theory we would be able to execute the bead casting.

Theory

Polystyrene bead casting can be performed in two ways. One manner is to make full the cast 25 to 30 per centum full and so using heat, either boiling H2O or baking it. Another manner is to boil the natural beads, dry the beads, make full the cast with them, and so heat it in an oven. We were to try both of these processs in our lab undertaking. My outlooks were that the casts would turn out good.

Materials & A ; Equipment Locations

H2O container to boil H2O lab

electric range lab

oven lab

aluminium casts lab

pan container to dry expanded beads lab

polystyrene beads icebox in lab

screen lab

Procedure

natural bead enlargement process

1. First we turned on the electric range and placed the H2O container that was about two tierces full on the range so the H2O could boil.

2. Then we filled the casts about 25 to 30 per centum full and closed the casts with the cast nuts.

3. When the H2O began to boil we placed the casts in the boiling H2O.

4. We left the casts in for about 20 proceedingss and so pulled them out and ran cold H2O over them in the sink for about a minute.

5. We removed the cast nu

T and took out the shaped stuffs.

pre-expanded bead process

1. First we put the natural beads in the boiling H2O and allow them spread out.

2. Then we removed them from the H2O with a screen.

3. We placed the expanded beads in a pan container so they could dry. They were left to dry for a hebdomad, until our following lab meeting.

4. After the beads had dried we filled a cast with them and placed the cast in the Blue M Oven, which was preheated to 275 grades Fahrenheit.

5. The cast was left in the oven for 20 proceedingss and so removed.

6. After chilling the cast we removed the cast nuts and removed the shaped stuffs.

Consequences

The natural bead enlargement process was successful ; the beads expanded and made terrific casts. While being heated in the cast the enlargement of gasses caused the beads to spread out. Our casts were in the forms of domains, one looked like a playground ball and the other looked like a regular domain. Below are manus studies our casts.

The result of the pre-expanded bead cast was less fortunate. The beads did non take form of the cast. To be more precise the beads did non alter at all.

Decision

In decision the natural bead enlargement process appears to be a better method for polystyrene casting. The natural bead enlargement process proved true to my outlooks and the casts turned out good. However we seemingly performed the pre-expanded bead cast falsely and the consequences were a failure. After executing the lab I looked through the occupation sheet for this undertaking and found a side note we overlooked on page 34. It specifically states to utilize freshly pre-expanded beads and the storage of expanded beads is 6 yearss upper limit.
