“It Is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man In possession of a good fortune must be In wants of a wife” Chapter 1 I During the time period that this book takes place, this quote could be proven true. At this time, there were arranged marriages based on a mans place in society and his fortune. Today, people get married because they are in love. Some people may marry others based on their financial standings but there are many wealthy people, my aunt for example, who have no desire to rush into marriage. | 2. A young man, Mr.. Bentley, has arrived n town.

He is wealthy and successful. Parents dream of their daughters finding a husband like him. Throughout the beginning of the book, Mrs.. Bennett tries to impress Mr.. Bentley with her daughters so he may find one of them a desirable wife, specifically her daughter Jane. Chapter 1 I This shows the deference In society between then and now. During the time this book takes place, women didn’t have obligations In society other than finding a good husband. Now a days, parents don’t care about their daughters getting married as much as they care about them getting a good education and being successful In life. . In the book, Jane Austin shows opposition of characters between Mr.. Bentley and Mr.. Dared. Chapter 4 | Mr.. Dared is arrogant, reserved, fastidious, and has manners that weren’t very inviting. Mr.. Bentley is a gentleman with a pleasant countenance and admirable manners. | 4. “.. But I can guess how it was; everybody says that he is ate up with pride” – talking about Mr.. Dared. Chapter 5 | This quote explains how people view Mr.. Dared; his attitude makes people believe he is very stuck up and conceited. | 5. Throughout the beginning of the book, Jane and Elizabeth gossip a lot about men like Mr..

Bentley and other possible future husbands. Chapter 4 ; 5 | This shows us as readers that although these two girls are In search of a husband, they are still young and gossip. My sister and I talk about boys as well. It also shows how close they are, and my sister and I are. | 6. The morning after the ball, the women discussed things that had occurred the night before that they found of great Chapter 5 | Reading about what these women were discussing, it importance. Was almost as if they were competing as to who was more successful that evening with Mr..

Bentley. Mrs.. Bennett made sure it was known that he danced with Jane ore than once. That means he found her worthy of being his dance partner. He also couldn’t keep his eyes off of her the entire night. | 7. Mr.. Collins, cousin of the Bennett, has arrived at the house. He will take the property when Mr.. Bennett passes because women weren’t fit to own their own land. Mr.. Collins proposes to Elizabeth, but she declines. Mrs.. Bennett begs her to marry him so Elizabeth can also inherit their property and belongings. Chapter 19 | When I first read this, I was shocked.

It was of the utmost Importance as a woman to be married then, and the first person to ask for Elizabeth hand In marriage she declined. This shows that although Elizabeth is young, she is still strong and brave enough to do what she believes is Mr.. Collins proposal, Elizabeth soon discovers that he had proposed to her close friend Charlotte. Chapter 20 | After reading this I realized Mr.. Collins was Just looking for a suitable wife and did not really seem to mind who it was; he didn’t have to be in love. When men propose today, it is much more meaningful. | 9. Miss mingled, sister of Mr..

Bentley, sends a letter to Jane informing her that they will be staying in London all winter. This letter makes the Bennett doubtful of him returning to Interfiled and proposing to Jane. Chapter 21 I This came quite shocking to me. As a reader you could feel the connection between Mr.. Bentley and Jane, and all of a sudden he is leaving Interfiled. My opinion of Mr.. Bentley changed a bit at this point in the book. At first I saw him as a gentleman in love who would never do something to ruin that, but he suddenly leaves after all of the affection he has shown toward Jane.

In my opinion, this doesn’t seem right or fair to Jane. | 10. Mrs.. Bennett I I found Mrs.. Bennett to be annoying throughout this book. Her only concern was for all five of her daughters to get married, since they have no money. He importance of women being married during this time was shown through her character. | 11. During a conversation that Elizabeth has with Colonel Fatalism, he mentions that Dared claims to have recently saved a friend from an imprudent marriage. Elizabeth discovers that the friend he is speaking of is Mr..

Bentley and his possible marriage to her sister Jane. Chapter 33 | When Elizabeth discovers this, she has all the more reason to dislike Mr.. Dared. She blames him for Cane’s unhappiness, and believes that he purposely sabotaged their relationship. | 12. ‘In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you. ” Chapter 34 | This quote is a very surprising one. Dared went from not being interested in Elizabeth to confessing his love for her and proposing.

You can tell Dared is truly in love with her because he first came across as a cold heartless man and then he says these warm and loving words to Elizabeth. I felt his proposal truly came from his heart, but because of what Elizabeth discovered before Mr.. Dairy’s proposal, she rejects and accuses him of sabotaging Jane and Bangle’s relationship. | 13. A theme wrought the book is love. I Many of the characters are falling in and out of love. Mr.. Dared falls in love with Elizabeth, Jane and Mr.. Bentley fall in love, and even Charlotte and Mr.. Collins fall in love although it was a sudden marriage.

Even though Mr.. Dared and Mr.. Bentley are in a higher social class than Elizabeth and Jane, real love can overcome any social standings, and that is proved in this book. | 14. Elizabeth receives two letters from Jane. One tells her that Lydia has eloped with Nickname, and another that says there is no word from neither Lydia or Hickman and there is a possibility that they are not married yet. Elizabeth is very frightened by this because her families reputation is at risk. Chapter 35 | This shows us as the reader that Elizabeth cares deeply about her family.

She blamed herself for Lydia running off and being missing due to the fact that she had not exposed Hickman for the man he truly is. | 15. Lydia and Hickman are found and Hickman has agreed to marry Lydia as long as he is guaranteed a small income. Chapter 49 | Hickman first came off as a polite young man who was taken advantage of and could do no rung, but this shows us that Hickman only cares about himself and his money. I Nickname to ensure that he would marry Lydia. Chapter 49 | When we first met Mr.. Dared in the beginning of the novel, he was introduced as a cold hearted man “ho thought everyone not worthy of his time.

Towards the middle of the novel we begin to realize that Mr.. Dared is actually a kindhearted man who cares about others and their happiness. Discovering this made me change my opinion of Mr.. Dared and like him more. | 17. Bentley finally proposes to Jane and she says she is the happiest creature in the world. Chapter 55 | Even though Jane tried to act as though she felt nothing towards Mr.. Bentley because he left Interfiled with no real explanation, she truly does like him very much and couldn’t wait to be his wife. 18. Elizabeth realizes that Dared is really a good man and that she is in love with him.

Chapter 50 & 51 I This is ironic because when Dared had proposed to her the first time she declined, and she had much dislike for him throughout the entire beginning of the novel. Now, she has come to realize that she is in love with him. | 19. Mr.. Dared proposes to Elizabeth again and she accepts. Chapter 57 | This comes to a shock to Elizabethan family because she expressed so much hate towards him and now she loves him and wants to be his wife. Elizabeth explains to Mr.. Bennett how much she loves him. | 20. Mr.. Bennett I Mr.. Bennett is the father of Elizabeth, Jane, Kitty, Lydia, and Mary.

He is sarcastic and kind. Elizabeth is his favorite daughter. I feel that Mr.. Bennett is a good father, but he could be a better one. When Lydia ran away, he tried searching for her but in the end gave up, and someone else wound up finding her. This made me view Mr.. Bennett as a weaker man because of his inability to find his missing daughter. | 21. Elizabeth Bennett and Miss Bentley Juxtapose each other throughout this novel. I Miss Bentley is a very jealous character. She wants attention from Mr.. Dared, but see’s all of his attention is drawn to Elizabeth.

Miss Bentley tries to do whatever she can to come between them, but they fall in love and there’s nothing she can do to change Mr.. Dairy’s feelings. | 22. Elizabeth Bennett I Elizabeth is the favorite child of Mr.. Bennett because she is the most intelligent. She isn’t afraid to have her own opinion and do things because she wants to. Her quick Judgments always lead her astray, and she tends to believe rumors and stories she hears about Mr.. Dared. Elizabeth winds up discovering her love for him towards the end of the novel. 23. In my opinion, I am most like Elizabeth Bennett.

I Elizabeth is an independent woman, as am l. During this entire novel the Bennett girls were in search of a husband to support them. Elizabeth on the other hand didn’t care as much about finding a husband and rejected the first proposal she has received. She doesn’t need someone to rely on, and I feel the same. I don’t like having to depend on others because I believe things Note get done properly and things won’t go my way. We are also alike because both Elizabeth and I believe that you need to really know someone to love them. She also Isn’t afraid to express her opinion and neither am l. | 24.

Social class seems to be a theme throughout the book. I When Mr.. Dared first met Elizabeth, the first thing he Judged her on was where she was placed in society because she was not nearly as wealthy as him. Miss Bentley continuously made remarks about how the ententes did not have as much money as her family. Lady Catherine De Burgh eddied the Bennett girls as people much lower than her in society because they could {oh love someone, social class should not come between that. True love is true love no matter what. By the end of the book, social classes don’t seem to be of much importance because of love. 25. The motif of pride and prejudice is love and courtship. I It was important during this time period to find a suitable partner, and that is what this novel is about. Mr.. Collins proposes to two women before finding a Knife, Mr.. Hickman goes through many women before finding a wife that he can get money from, Mr.. Bentley goes against his sisters Judgment in order to be with the one he loves, and Mr.. Dared and Elizabeth fight all obstacles before they realize they’re in love. We learn more about each character in this book by the way they respond to love, which is why it is so important.
