Qualitative Research Critique Essays

Qualitative Research Critique: Retrospective Perception of Difficult Communication Wene Mawalla Brock University The article “Patient Real time and 12 month retrospective perception of difficult communication in the cancer diagnostic period” is written by Throne, S. , Armstrong, E. , Harris, S. R. , Hislop, G. , Kim-Sing, C. , Oglov, J. L. , Oliffe, J. L. , & Stajduhar, K. L. through a naturalist setting. This article will attempt to give a systematic while subjective research method used to portray and give meaning to experiences.

This article will be reviewed based on plausibility, the trustworthiness, and its significant to to future and current nursing theory or practice. Title The title is clear and displays the research problem and study population. It clearly states who the study will be performed on while giving the reader some insight as to the retrospective nature of the study method. The title however does not suggest specifically who the population will be and what aspects of communication they will be researching. Abstract The abstract clearly and concisely provides a summary of the main features of the report.

It includes some background as to why this research was necessary, what the research involves, the population, method, findings and the application of this research for the future. Statement of the phenomenon of interest The article provides sufficient background information to lead up to the statement of interest. The background info, while pertinent hindered in identifying the problem. This statement could be identified though inference by reading the passage but it was not explicitly states in the section.

This problem does have a significant in nursing because it deals with the poor communication during the diagnostic period. As the nurse, it part of our mandate to help guide and empower our clients. When communication fails to meet the quality expected of it, it can cause undue stress to the client. Also, the initial step of the diagnostic period is when the client may need to feel empowered in their decision making, confident they are making the right decisions, and that they have whatever resources and supports that can be made available to them. This study chose to do a qualitative study which matched the needs of the study.

The goal of the investigators was to explore an are of interest seeking to understand different concepts. Because they wished to explore a broad are, a qualitative study would allow them to understand the clients experience. In additions they would be able to present their findings explain and convey findings in a manner that allows the full meaning and the complexity of the experience to come through. Literature review The articles the authors used to support this research were consistent to their problem. The articles did a good job of providing reasons as to why this research was necessary.

However, a majority of the articles where older publication with very few references within a 5 year publishing date. This is significant because such out of date research can lead to belief about the direction the research study is heading in. This may result in the investigator being unprepared for concepts, having a huge impact on the results. At the same time, we keep in mind that a qualitative study seeks to explore areas that are less defined. With this definition in mind, we can understand the lack of current literature to rely on while conducting this study. It also fails to identify important gaps in the research.

It did however summarize information on both the dependent and independent variable, using appropriate language and paraphrasing appropriately. Conceptual underpinnings and research question Key concepts are well defined and clear. Each is well references with an explanation of the meaning. Research question are not explicitly states. It would have been beneficial to include the research question after the explanation of the general problem. The article states that the general problem is “the continuing prevalence of poor communication during the diagnostic window of time” but does not continue to propose a question.

Method The method used to collect data was congruent to the identified research tradition. In their methods they conducted interview and asked questions pertaining to the client’s communication experience. This form of question and answer allows the investigator to explore different lived experiences, following the previous set or research tradition. An adequate amount of time was spent on time in the field, at least 2 years to determine how communication needs and preferences changed across their cancer trajectory.

I feel that this amount of time was sufficient because they were only seeking information for a certain time frame in the trajectory. It would have been interesting though to add what previous literature has uncovered about communication needs further down the road then cancer diagnosis. This study did not all unfold in the field. For continuation of the interviews they were asked questions through face to face or telephone calls depending on the participant’s convenience. This method still allowed the researcher to capitalize on any new or early understanding.

It gives the researcher flexibility in asking questions to continue on the path that the participants take them in. The research does not show any evidence of reflexivity. The contact number was adequate to understand the phenomena. Sample and setting The population was adequately described in detail. The research included where there participation came from and the method of their participating in this study. It also described age and background information that proved useful in picturing the ongoing of this study. The approach that the researchers recruited volunteers was appropriate and safe for all involved.

Although they did not get a population that was as diverse, it was not necessary significant to the research problem. Data collecting and procedures The method of gathering data was appropriate. They followed strict guidelines. There was plenty of data gathered and the investigators took the extra step in organizing information to make the research clear and direct for the reader. Procedures were well carried out. There was evidence of organization and preplanning. Staff collecting data had obtained a degree in the health services and were underwent further training. This added more uality and trustworthiness to the research. These methods enhanced trustworthiness and provided descriptions that were more than sufficient. Findings The researchers reported their findings comprehensively and clearly. The researchers provided authenticity through liberal use of quotations from the participants. Each of the themes were later confirmed clearly and explained. Discussion The investigators interpret key findings based on the appropriate cultural context. These are detailed and have an increased qualitative quality through the use of references to support their claims.

All major findings are discussed and compared to the literature reviewed previously. The discussion also includes topics as to the barriers that prevent communication in the diagnostic period. These findings are consistent with the sample size because they make inferences based on the phenomena that they have observed. However this article does not directly address the issue of transferability. It does state the usefulness of their research toward enhancing communication during the cancer diagnostic period. This discussion of implication displays and support the relevance for this study.

It is reasonable and manageable if it is carried out into the field. Conclusion This section stated the skeptism toward accomplishing their goal to maximize efficiency in communication during the cancer diagnostic period. This falls within the problem they discussed and set out to explore. This was beneficial to the research because it does acknowledge the human aspects of barriers and difficulties that will occur in goals. They acknowledge that while their study will provide a valid basis for beginning to consider alternatives approaches, it will not necessary implement a new communication system in the diagnostic field.

Presentation and summary assessment This report proves be well written and conveyed the information clearly in an organized fashion. They provided important information with enough detailed and used references to support claims when necessary. All descriptions where rich in detail and played a significant role in the understanding of the emotions and events the participants went through. The researchers were able to put portray meaning and human feelings through their work. The study appears to be trustworthy with a truth value to their findings. This article while meaningful did not lead any new meaningful evidence but instead supported those that had previously been found.
