Racism in to kill a mocking bird - African American Essay Example

The most obvious form of discrimination in To Kill a Mockingbird is racism; however, there are other types of prejudice and discrimination that typify relationships among the novel’s characters - Racism in to kill a mocking bird introduction. Scout, for example, is ridiculed in “To Kill a Mockingbird” because she is a tomboy. Boo Radley is ostracized despite the fact that hardly anyone knows him. Reverse racism is also present in the novel, as evidenced by the threats against Atticus Finch and his family as he defends Tom Robinson. In current day America we still see these injustice’s but at a lower cases. We sill see African American who have no evidence against them still get charged and prosecuted because they are black. In to kill a mocking bird we see that the parents are teaching there kid that they should not play with black kid because just because they are black. They look at black people as trash. There is a quto in the story by aunt alexendria and says “There’s something in our world that makes men lose their heads- they couldn’t be fair if they treid. In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s word, the white always wins.

They’re ugly, but these are the facts of life” (Lee 252). Aunt Alexandra’s excuse of not allowing Scout to play with Walter because she thinks he is trash proves how much segregation is going on already. The Finches and the Cunninghams are both white families, but Aunt Alexandra dislikes the Cunninghams because they are poor.We see this even in today as white people think that black people have no manners and teach there kids that they should not be near them because they want have a bad influence on there children. In present time America when African American is arrested for crime he looked at harshly then a white man.For example if a black man and white man are accused of rap the black is prused harder than the white man just because he is black. Which makes the court corrupt and racist.Atticus even say this to is kid and says “There’s something in our world that makes men lose their heads- they couldn’t be fair if they treid. In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s word, the white always wins. They’re ugly, but these are the facts of life” (Lee 252).

The speech that Atticus shares with his children proves how much injustice and racism goes on in their town. Atticus tries to tell Jem and Scout that whatever happens between a white man and a black man, the white man will always win. Because that’s just the way it is. This shows that no matter what, there will always be people who are racist. Although people will not like it very much, but segregation will always take place. What we today is also when a white man is trying to defend a black man we see he get hated because he is defending a black man and white man. White peole think that there against there own people for defending a black person. Even if if he is doing the right thing.there is evidence in the book for example “Not only Finch waiting on tables but one in the courthouse lawing for *******!” Jem stiffened. Mrs. Dubose’s shot had gone and she knew it: “Yes indeed, what has the world come to when a Finch goes against his raisings? I’ll tell you!” She put her hand to her mouth. When she drew it away, it trailed a long silver thread of saliva. “Your fathers no better than the ******* and trash he works for!” (Lee 117). This quote said by Mrs. Dubose towards Jem and Scout shows how racists she is. Mrs. Dubose and most of the towns people dislike the Finches because Atticus is a white man defending a black man. Jem and Scout stats to become aware that all this is caused by segregation. Since Atticus is defending Tom Robinson in court Mrs. Dubose starts to insult Atticus for ‘lawing for *******’ which infuriates both of his children. The most obvious form of discrimination in To Kill a Mockingbird is racism; however, there are other types of prejudice and discrimination that typify relationships among the novel’s characters. We see these are all part of stereotypes against back people and have these perceives against them. Even tho they are not turn and just leaves segration between he two. This is important because you stop being racist and become like one. As human beings are equal
