Recital Review Essay

The room was packed with people from the Warrensburg community as well as the Universities’ campus. Students and civilians gathered together in a voice of unity and with those voices they made music to be joyful about. This was the University of Central Missouri’s Feast of Carols, presented by the Department of Music. The concert featured the vocal abilities of the Collegiate Choir, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Women’s Choir, and the Concert Choir. John Villaveeces led all choirs and audience members under the direction of professors Dr.

Zabriskie, Dr. Robert Lawrence, and accompanied on the piano. His musical abilities on the “keys” made it hard for anyone not to sing along. This concert was a bit less formal than any of the others. The choir members still wore their usual formal garments, whilst carrying sheet music in the recognizable black folders. The thing that stood out most was the allowance of the audience to join the choirs onstage and stand in their seats to be a part of the choirs angelic sound for just a few moments.

We sang together as one, the songs that have been celebrated throughout Christmas caroling history. Jingle Bells, O Come All Ye Faithful, Up On The Housetop, Deck The Halls, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and Handel’s Hallelujah. Apiece not so well known that was memorable, was In The Bleak Midwinter. This piece was so calm and relaxing. The vocal parts blended together like a good pot of jambalaya. No voice part over powered the other and no one singer made their voice the “lead” of their section.

It was a piece that the audience could listen to over and over. Not to mention the control in the dynamics. This piece was really a representation of what skill it takes to be in a choir on a collegiate level. They Concert Choir did a wonderful job representing their conductor and the composer of this piece. The Feast of Carols was a nice contrast to the other concerts and it felt wonderful to be able to enjoy in song and feel as if I were a part of something as beautiful as the voices that make up these choirs. I would definitely do it again.
