A Noncommissioned Officer’s Top Priority: Caring for Soldiers

Table of Content

The role of a Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) is to provide care and support for soldiers, aiming to ensure their success. To effectively train soldiers as individuals and teams, NCOs must have knowledge and understanding of them, instilling confidence in their abilities during battles. Additionally, NCOs are responsible for fulfilling their own duties and promoting unit success. They are also held accountable for both their conduct and that of their soldiers. The duties of NCOs can be categorized into three types: specified duties, directed duties, and implied duties.

Commanders set policies and standards, while all leaders are responsible for offering guidance, resources, assistance, and supervision to soldiers. The achievement of missions requires officers and NCOs to work together in advising, assisting, and learning from each other. The responsibilities of Noncommissioned Officers (NCOs) can be categorized into two groups. The first category is command responsibility, which involves the collective accountability of the unit in carrying out missions. For example, a company commander is responsible for completing assigned tasks and missions, with superiors holding them accountable. Military leaders delegate responsibility for their sections, units, or organizations to specific NCOs. NCOs not only have individual duties but also ensure the success of their teams and units. The extent of an NCO’s responsibility depends on the mission, position held, and personal willingness to accept it.

The second category is individual responsibility, which refers to being accountable for personal conduct. In the Army, soldiers bear their own set of responsibilities that cannot be delegated. Each soldier assumes accountability for their actions towards fellow soldiers, leaders, and the unit as a whole.
